About the Author

Dr. Murari P. Singh (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) is the President of Safe Technical Solutions, Inc (SAFETSOL). Dr. Singh has been involved in the design, development and analysis of industrial turbomachinery for more than thirty years with Turbodyne Corporation, Dresser Industries, Dresser-Rand Company, GE CONMEC and most recently with GE Oil & Gas as Consulting Engineer. Dr. Singh has extensive knowledge and experience with fatigue and fracture mechanics, stress and vibration of structures, reliability, life analysis, probabilistic analysis. His practical application experience includes a variety of rotating equipments including Warm Gas and FCC Expanders, Steam Turbines and Centrifugal Compressors. He developed the widely used SAFE diagram for reliability evaluation of turbine blades. The SAFE diagram methodology is superior to other current methods in providing clear analytical and predictive information. This concept has been applied to other turbomachineries. It is a significant contribution to design methods and vibration technology for the evaluation of turbine blade reliability. For many years, Dr. Singh has been involved in (developing and teaching) application of lifing strategy to many mechanical components, this includes hcf, lcf, creep, fracture mechanics. Probabilistic estimation is used to estimate risk in design. He is the co-author of the book "Steam Turbine, Design, Application, and Rerating", second edition published by McGraw-Hill Co.

Dr. George M. Lucas, PE, is a registered Professional Engineer with over 34 years of experience in the design, analysis and operation of steam turbines and large rotating equipment. As Director of Engineering for Dresser-Rand’s Wellsville Steam Turbine Operation, George was directly responsible for product design, steam path engineering, turbine performance, and manufacturing engineering for their custom engineered process drive steam turbines and steam turbine generators. He was directly responsible for the design of over 100 custom engineered steam turbines and contributed to the design and development of several Engineered Steam Turbine product families. Mr. Lucas was Design Project Leader for the joint Dresser-Rand/EPRI project that resulted in the successful commissioning of the 110 MW gas turbine/expander train at PowerSouth Electric Cooperative’s McIntosh Compressed Energy Storage Plant. Mr. Lucas received B. Sc. (1975) and M. Eng. (1976) degrees from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He holds two U.S. patents and has authored technical papers on topics including the use of advanced seals in steam turbines, compressed air energy storage and the development of advanced steam turbines for syn-gas compressor drive service. Mr. Lucas is currently an independent consultant serving OEM and end-user clients in oil and gas, power generation, and manufacturing industries.

Unique Ind Steam Turbine Book

The book "Blade Design and Analysis for Steam Turbines" provides a unique compendium of all concepts, basic analytical formulas and techniques needed to cope with design of industrial steam turbines flowpath (blades) components.
While there is a wider literature on large steam turbines applied in power generation, very few books are covering or focusing on industrial steam turbines for mechanical drive applications. Mechanical drive applications are especially demanding in requiring to steam turbines capability to adapt to variable speed and variable loads, challenging the design of flowpath components. Present book from Dr. Singh is one of the few books covering these challenges and presenting a very good summary of 30 years expertise achieved in mechanical drive steam turbines design.
The book "Blade Design and Analysis for Steam Turbines" is very well covering the challenges of design for dynamic behavior and vibration of industrial steam turbines blades. It moves from guidance to vibration behavior of bladed disk system (chapter 7), to damping concepts and damper system design (chapter 6), to methods (simplified and detailed) to estimate dynamic stresses (Chapter 7), to guidance to perform High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) assessment of blades including the effects of residual stresses and giving useful guidance on fatigue resistance correction factors (Chapter 8), to a review of manufacturing methods and design solutions (Chapter 3).
The book represents a basic reading for those who are approaching the design of blades for variable speed mechanical drive industrial steam turbines.

Good technical content, but needs much better editing

The folks who wrote this obviously know what they are doing, but the text is either poorly edited, or written by someone for whom English is a second language. The text has a large number of grammatical errors, dropped words, etc. It can require several readings of a paragraph to grasp what is being said. In addition, there are a number of instances where mathematical terms are not defined (or defined in translated English), making it difficult to understand what is being presented. Apart from these foibles, it is a very good book.

Blade Design fundamentals

The book from Dr. Singh and Mr. Lucas is a book focused on the key design factors and challenges for steam turbine/ turbomachinery equipment : the flowpath blading. They present a very good summary of 30+ years of expertise achieved in mechanical drive steam turbines design. As steam turbines develop further into new applications where cyclic duty and part-power settings are even more important(such as in the concentrated solar power production field), the relevance to this blade design knowledge and suitable guidance for acceptable design is even more significant.

This text book covers the overall design knowledge of industrial steam turbines blades/ disks including a very methodic and detailed review of dynamic behavior and vibrations. The book builds knowledge very progressively from guidance on blade materials and construction, to overall stress and damage mechanisms, to methods to estimate dynamic stresses in performing High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) assessment of blades, to a final assessment of blade life improvement options and summarizing the life cycle risks.

Although there are some areas where editing of text could be improved, this book is a great technical reference and baseline for all those who are approaching the design of blades for application in variable speed mechanical drive industrial steam turbines.

About the Author

Robert D. Clements, Professor of Art, taught art education at the University of Georgia for 25 years. There, he won the University’s highest awards for his teaching and research. A renowned artist in his own right, Dr. Clements’s works are on display in museums and institutes throughout the world. Besides his sculpture and public art, he has written three books and 60 articles and directed many grant projects. Born in Pittsburgh, PA,Dr. Clements received his BFA degree from Carnegie Mellon University and his graduate art degrees from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Clements is recognized for his work in Who’s Who in American Art and Who’s Who in America. He has written the fifth through current editions of Emphasis Art. To understand Dr. Clements’s influence on the world of art and art education, one need only speak with the many art teachers throughout the country who speak of him with reverence and who don’t hesitate for a moment to provide their students’ works for use in his books.

Frank Wachowiak (1913–1998) was a master teacher and artist whose approach to teaching art to children is recognized throughout the field. Born in Wisconsin, he received his degrees from the University of Iowa where he subsequently taught until moving to the University of Georgia in 1967. For 50 years his passion for a life in art was evident as he worked in the happy, charged environment of children searching, discovering, and creating through art.As he taught and studied children’s art

Evan Goer is a Senior Technical Writer at Yahoo! in Sunnyvale, CA, where he works for an engineering team that develops Yahoo's internal deployment infrastructure. He also works closely with the YUI core engineering team. Before that, Evan worked for startups and corporate behemoths alike, documenting everything from how to speed up applications on big iron Sun hardware to how to treat cancer patients with electron beam radiation therapy.

Evan is a Sunnyvale native and holds a Bachelor's of Science in Physics from Harvey Mudd College. He is on an eternal quest for the perfect documentation format and build system.

Fantastic resource for both beginners and seasoned YUI 3 devs

Even though it's been around for a few years now, there are surprisingly few books about YUI 3. Until now, the best way to learn the library was to dive in and refer to the official documentation or third-party blog posts and tutorials, and the best way to gain advanced knowledge of the library's inner workings and design patterns was to read the source code. Not anymore!

The YUI 3 Cookbook is organized as a collection of standalone solutions for a wide variety of common tasks, and does a fantastic job of introducing the important concepts and best practices of YUI 3 in a way that beginners will easily understand. Each chapter presents a series of problems or tasks, code that solves the problems or completes the tasks, and detailed discussions of how the code works and what's going on behind the scenes.

Beginners will find the wide variety of ready-to-use recipes and clear examples useful as they learn how to do things with the library, and experts will find the detailed discussions illuminating since they often cover best practices and the reasons behind YUI 3's patterns and architecture.

Evan Goer writes with clarity and wit, keeping things interesting even in the longer recipes. The example code is both easy to understand and technically accurate (Evan worked directly with the YUI team while writing the book), and even some of the library's newest features like the App Framework are covered. Recipes range from simple DOM manipulation and UI effects to Ajax to full-blown widgets and MVC apps.

The bottom line: if you use YUI 3, or even if you're just curious about it, you need this book.

You will be a better web developer after reading this book!

I am a pretty avid YUI user - having worked at Yahoo! for many years and I've been following the evolution of YUI from an internal javascript library to a mature, fast, and reliable framework that it is today. While the online documentation is very good, it often leaves creating examples of specific features as an exercise for the reader. I don't know about you, but I learn things much faster by simple example than by pouring over potentially convoluted documentation. This book fulfills that need quite nicely! Not just for YUI purists, this book is an excellent way to get up to speed on YUI by DOING rather and just READING. You can use every example in the book, and try them out on your own to see how they are constructed. There are a broad range of things like creating lightboxes to managing history and the browser back button that you probably never knew you could do with YUI! It also is a great way to learn about the overarching ideas behind YUI, and why it may be a great library to graduate to once you've gone beyond just making buttons change on hover, or you are tired of struggling with conflicting plugins. I don't "bookmark" many books with post-its, but there are so many handy things in this book, that I've already marked several recipes that have made my YUI development experience much better.
Even if you have never tried YUI before, you can learn a lot about web development here through the recipes. Chapters like Infrastructure can help you learn to build your own web apps without having to go through lots of complicated trial and error.
Needless to say, I whole heartedly recommend this book.

It's what a recipe book should be

I am pretty much a n00b with YUI3. I dabble with it when I want to add some slick elements to my web pages without a lot of fuss. I'm not a huge JavaScript guy who ponders closures and how to implement the latest hotness in NodeJS.

This book is perfect for me. It just tells me what I want to know accurately, and in a straightforward way. It also doesn't assume I'm already an expert on the subject. This book is also concise enough that an expert would probably find it useful as well.

One trap I see authors of these sorts of books fall into is building the *huge* example program. They introduce concept after concept integrating everything into one monster program with all sorts of cruft to make the thing work. Not so with this book. The YUI 3 Cookbook instead gives you digestible discreet examples that stand on their own. It illustrates the item in question without requiring the reader to excavate it from a huge mountain of stuff I'm not interested in. Most of the examples in this cookbook fit into a single page which makes deciphering the code much easier.

I wish more technical books were written like this one.

Tantalising

The author seems to have a knack of making you wait and wait, almost in painful frustration and hunger for the characters to get together. This is true in this book and also Trapped, another superb story by the same author.

Throughout My Summer Romance, you are praying for Dayna and Alessia to get together and so the payoff is well worth it. You can literally feel the electricity between the two characters, especially during their first two meetings.

The setting for the story is Firenze and after reading it, I was filled with a desire to visit. The author goes into detail about the renaissance capital to the extent that it's almost a character in the story.

We are taught life lessons in the book, which made it a very worthwhile read. If I could change anything then it would have been for it to be a longer story, but I still loved it nonetheless. It is also very well written.

Sweet story - fun read

Having come back from overseas myself, I felt a sense of déjà vu. :) the story is written well and it has presence (character development, the uncertainty when one discovers who they thought they were may not be, etc.). I wish the story was a bit longer, but it was longer this. I truly enjoyed the character development and how, through the authors style, you could almost relate to the character or feel like the fly on the wall during their scenes. Will need to explore other pieces of work from author. :) happy readings = good juju ;)

I couldn't get into either of the two heroines as real people. They were both stereotypes and I couldn't feel any romance between them. I suggest books like Suddenly a Novel, She's My Ride, The Gravity Between Us, or Stars Collide if you want we'll written romances.

Outstanding Guide

I purchased this book because I am new to the Leasing Industry. In effort to be more knowledgeable, I purchased this book. So far, I'm in the early reading and can tell this is a GREAT ASSET! I read it every day with much anticipation.

Some earlier comments spoke negatively about the CD with Forms and worksheets. My book did not have the CD, but a caption in the front of the book tells me to visit this website for download of all the forms. Actually, it went very smooth and I am delighted with all the information. One thing about the download, you will need to re-adjust the formatting to get the form to print clearly. These documents are stored in RTF (Rich Text Format) and we use MSWord 07. Not a problem, I guess I expected to download and print with no adjustments of any kind. Thats not what happened. If you take the time to change your paper style, adjust your margins, and fill in your applicable data, the forms are WONDERFUL.

Overall, I wish I had this guide years ago! I wouldn't be so far behind the learning curve today.

Wow what a book. Very complete with all types of equipment leasing. Really good for me because i own an equipment rental business and i realized that my lease protects me from a lot of liability because its more like a finance lease and customer is responsible for all upon delivery. Book is 10.
