Raymond Scupin is Professor of Anthropology and International Studies in Lindenwood University. He received his B.A. degree in history and Asian studies, with a minor in anthropology, from the University of California- Angeles. He completed his M.A. and Ph. D degrees in anthropology at the University of California-Santa Barbara. Dr.Scupin is truly a four-field anthropologist. During graduate school, Dr. Scupin did archaeological and ethnohistorical research on Native Americans in the Santa Barbara region. He did extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Thailand with a focus on understanding the ethnic and religious movements among the Muslin minority. In addition, he taught linguistics and conducted linguistic research while based at a Thai University.

 

Dr.Scupin has been teaching undergraduate courses in anthropology for more than 30 years at a variety of academic institutions, including community colleges, research universities, and a four-year liberal arts university. Thus, he has taught a very broad spectrum of undergraduate students. Through his teaching experience, Dr.Scupin was prompted to write this textbook, which would allow a wide range of undergraduate students to understand the holistic and global perspectives of the four-field approach in anthropology. In 1999, Dr.Scupin received the Missouri Governor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

 

Dr.Scupin has published many studies on his ethnographic research in Thailand. He recently returned to Thailand and other countries of Southeast Asia to update his ethnographic data on Islamic trends in that area, an increasingly important topic in the post 9/11 world. He is a member of many professional associations, including the American Anthropological Association, the Asian Studies Association, and the Council of Thai Studies. Dr, Scupin has recently authored Religion and culture: An Anthropological Focus and Race and Ethnicity: An Anthropological Focus on the U.S. and the World, and Peoples and Cultures of Asia, all published by Prentice Hall Press.

I would like to introduce some of the new features in the eighth edition of Cultural anthropology: a global perspective. This textbook was inspired by one of the first  anthropology textbooks published by prentice hall press authored by the late Eric wolf who emphasized that anthropology has always been scientific and humanistic. Wolf said that "anthropology is both the most scientific of the humanities and the most humanistic of the sciences." (1964:88). We think that this perspective is as relevant today as ever. Eric was kind enough to offer suggestions in developing the first edition of this textbook and we have continued to emphasize his holistic and global focus throughout the different editions. We emphasize what we call the "synthetic-complementary approach" that views the scientific method and the methods within the humanities as complementary and suggest that both perspectives are needed to help explain and understand human behavior and cultures.

 

To achieve our holistic and global focus with coverage of both the classic and the most current research in anthropology, we have had the assistance of many anthropologists who have used and reviewed our textbook for this eighth edition. We have updated and refined all of our chapters in the textbook drawing on the most current research by anthropologists doing research throughout the world.

Educational Goals and Orientation of This Text

The world has become a small place. Global communications, international trade, geopolitical events with worldwide impact, and ease of travel have brought people and cultures into more intimate contact than ever before, forcing this generation of students to become more knowledgeable about societies other than their own. This textbook is grounded in the belief that an enhanced global awareness is essential for people preparing to take their place in the fast-paced, increasingly interconnected world of the twenty-first century. Anthropology is ideally suited to introduce students to a global perspective. Through exploring the range of human diversity each of the subfields of anthropology helps liberate students from a narrow, parochial view and enables them to appreciate the full sweep of the human condition.

The anthropological perspective, which stresses critical-thinking, the evaluation of competing hypotheses, and the skills to generalize from specific data, contributes significantly to a well-rounded education. This text engages readers in anthropology by delving into both classic and current research in the field. This ItIIreflects a commitment to anthropology¿s holistic and integrative approach. It spells out how the four basic subfields of anthropology¿physical anthropology, archaeology, linguistics, and ethnology¿together yield a comprehensive understanding of humanity. Because the subfields often overlap, insights from all of them are woven together to reveal the holistic fabric of a particular society or the threads uniting all of humanity. In examining anthropological research, this text often refers to research conducted in other fields.

CContemporary anthropologists draw on the findings of biologists, paleontologists, geologists, economists, historians, psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, religious studies specialists, philosophers, and researchers in other areas whose work sheds light on anthropological inquiry. In addition to enlarging the scope of the text, exploring interactions between anthropology and other fields sparks the critical imagination that brings the learning process to life.

The comparative approach, another cornerstone of the anthropological perspective, is also highlighted in this text. When anthropologists assess fossil evidence, artifacts, languages, or cultural beliefs and values, they weigh comparative evidence, while acknowledging the unique elements of each case, society or culture. The text casts an inquiring eye on materials from numerous geographical regions and historical eras to enrich student understanding.

A diachronic approach also characterizes this book. In evaluating human evolution, prehistoric events, language divergence, or developments in social structure, anthropologists must rely on models that reflect changes through time, so this diachronic orientation suffuses the text.

Three Unifying Themes of This Text

In the previous edition of this textbook we emphasized three unifying themes that structured the material presented. These have been retained and expanded in this seventh edition. The first two themes we introduce students to are the diversity of human societies and cultural patterns the world over and the similarities that make all humans fundamentally alike . To achieve these two objectives, we pay as much attention to universal human characteristics as we do to local cultural contexts and conditions. We emphasize the growing interconnectedness of humanity and both the positive and negative consequences of this reality.¿ We draw on anthropological studies to discover how people are responding to the process of globalization.

The third theme, which we emphasize more prominently in this edition, focuses on the interconnections between the sciences and humanities within anthropology. We call this the synthetic-complementary approach , which views the scientific method and the methods in the humanities as complementary and suggests that one is incomplete without the other. This theme had been mentioned in previous editions, but we make it much more of a centerpiece in this edition. This third important theme dovetails with the two other themes, demonstrating how human behavior is both unique to a specific cultures, and yet also universal.

Several decades ago, iin another anthropology textbook published by Prentice Hall (1964), the late Eric Wolf emphasized that anthropology has always had one foot in the sciences and one foot in the humanities. This observation is evermore true today. Wolf said, ¿Anthropology is both the most scientific of the humanities and the most humanistic of the sciences¿ (1964, 88). Eric was kind enough to give us suggestions in developing this textbook and we would like to carry on the tradition that Eric Wolf accentuated in his work. One of the important goals in this edition is to further highlight the fundamental importance of the synthetic-complementary approach to science and the humanities in anthropology.

Full of errors, an embarassment to the normally excellent Pen & Sword books.

This is my review on Amazon UK. I am left wishing I had not spent money for this book. I expected a discussion of Byzantine emperors who led their armies in battle. However, this book reads like a general history - one that is filled with factual errors and assumptions based on little or no evidence. The author uses the first 55 or so pages to give "background" information. He insists on calling emperors such as Constantine, his sons, Julian, and Valens "Byzantine" - probably to meet his purported goal of writing about "Fighting Emperors of Byzantium". This is intellectually dishonest. On P. 42 the author tells us that Theodosius may have ordered the massacre at Thessaonica due to his "hot-blooded Spanish origins". No, I am not kidding. On P. 56 the author tells us that Richimer appointed Romulus as a puppet emperor, when Richimer was dead three years before Romulus became emperor. The author then explains - based on no evidence at all in the historical record - that Odoacer "was not totally devoid of human feeling. Taking Romulus aside, he quietly told him to abdicate and sent him off to live on a generous pension with his relatives outside Rome. The boy needed little prompting." I could go on and on with such examples. While most of the Pen & Sword ancient history books are excellent, this one falls well below their standards. I am left wondering how this book was even published.

Good for general information on Byzantine emperors but weak as a military history...

This book is a nice try to present the careers of some 85 "fighting emperors" of Byzantium in such a way that even a layman would read it and enjoy a good true story. Although John Carr has obviously done his homework and he knows Greek so he could study a wide range of Byzantine first hand sources, he failed somehow to produce a real military history as was probably his initial intention. The book delves more into the personalities of the Byzantine emperors and the many dynastic disputes, intrigues and murders and less in campaigns, battles, tactics and military organizations. Only the battle of Manzikert (1071) is covered in more than a single page, while even multiyear campaigns like those of Heraclius against the Persians in the 7th century or of Basil the Bulgar Slayer against the Bulgars in the 11th century are hopelessly compressed into just a few lines. No tactics interpretation is to be found, neither the structural evolution of the Byzantine armies. Although there is some information on the "themata", the author suggests that initially there were 16 of them, while there were only 7 (reaching 33 in total in the 10th century). The author describes the defensive and offensive armament of the Byzantine infantry and cavalry very shortly but he doesn't explain the many changes that these armaments went through during the thousand years of the Byzantine empire! The mercenaries in Byzantine service are only mentioned as "battle axe wielding Vikings or Saxons" with no other detail regarding recruitment, payment, motives etc. Even the all important Greek Fire takes less than a page, while siege warfare is not analysed at all except for the fact that Byzantines used "catapults and mangonels". Mr Carr is heavily influenced by John Julius Norwich's fascinating three volume work on Byzantine history, he quotes him often enough and he even attempts to mimic his style writing a popular history that could be read as a novel, but in doing so he just loses sight of his subject which should be mainly a military history. Overall, this is a nice book for an introduction to the Byzantine history, it's a splendid collection of Byzantine emperors' short biographies which are very well arranged for easy access, but it can't be compared with John F. Haldon's military history of the same era ("The Byzantine Wars") or other scholarly works.

Required Reading for Accountants assisting Lean Operations

Very few companies in the United States use Lean manufacturing or service methods. Because of this, most people in business don't know much about Lean operations. Most especially, they don't know how accounting has to change in order to support and strengthen Lean operations. Who's Counting takes the fundamental messages about Lean operations and translates them into an easier to understand format for adjusting accounting to fit.
In many companies that have started Lean operations, the effort was later abandoned because no one understood the accounting and earnings implications of a Lean transition until it was started.
These challenges include going from measuring and "controlling" after-the-fact with statistics that operating people don't find very helpful to real time measurements created and used by the operators, dealing with write-offs as obsolete inventory is discovered as inventory levels are reduced, absorbing an unusual amount of overhead costs as production drops along with inventory, and finding enough work for operating people to do after their productivity goes up by 50 plus percent. Along the way, the company has to run its old accounting methods while it adjusts to the new ones. There's a terrific amount of work involved for the accountants, and it doesn't go away. At the same time, they need to learn about Lean operating methods so that they can play a role in finding better process methods.
Who's Counting? exposes almost all of the issues that can affect accounting in the first two years of a Lean transition. From that point of view, this is a five-star book.
I found, however, that the book was a little light on explaining how the Lean transition would take place in operations. Most accounting people will need to read another book about Lean operations to fully understand the concepts.
The situation in the book will strike some as far-fetched, but it works well to expose the relevant subjects. Many companies start Lean transitions without understanding the implications for how operations will have to be adjusted. That's about the same as in the book where the Lean expert, Mike Rogers, fails to provide enough advance warning about accounting and earnings issues.
I especially liked the ways that Mr. Solomon showed how denial can play a role in slowing down progress . . . and that the motives of those encouraging Lean operations may not be totally pure (as shown here by Joe Reynolds, a member of the board).
As I finished the book, I wondered how companies could get a more realistic understanding of what the Lean development process is like for all of their people before starting. I suspect that many more Lean transitions would succeed if the decision-makers and essential implementers could do so.

Decent Read on Lean

This is a pretty lousy novel, having weak dialog and lacking any meaningful character development. However, it is a decent business book telling us the fictional story of one company's quest to become lean. Saying that it is "a lean accounting novel" is somewhat of a misnomer since it doesn't tell us much about lean accounting. Rather the book tells us more about accounting in a lean environment.

The book has a fault common in many business books. Rather than compare two different business techniques done well, it compares a new technique with a well-established technique done poorly. When the company's problems with MRP are discussed, MRP is blamed for the problems, not the company's inept use of MRP. In the story, when the company lies to its MRP system, the MRP system is blamed, not the poor management of the system.

Not enough time was spent on what lean is, and the theories and techniques of lean.

A Must Read for Leaders on a Lean Journey

I work in Finance for a Fortune 200 company that is 100% committed to the Lean Journey. This book has been distributed, read and re-read throughout the company's leadership, both in Finance and in other areas, to help frame the issue of why Finance can be a barrier or an enabler to Lean. It does a great job of explaining not only the technical issues but really demonstrates the cultural obstacles and why they exist, all in an easy-to-read story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and in particular Finance leaders who are wondering where they fit in with Lean.

Epic maybe..Not a poem.

This translation is almost a parody of a translation. For example, and there are plenty of them, "thus Kieu: 'now verily the otherworld of joss, envigours near, ...' just to show a vocabulary chosen from a scrabble dictionary based on an early edition of the OED.

There may be a poem in there somewhere that resonates in Vietnamese, but it sure doesn't in English. At least not in this version.

How I got to this anyhow: "The Tale of Kieu" is a plot driving element in one of the Tannenbaum series (Butch Karp et ux, et al), and I thought I ought to check it out. Turns out to be real, and one hopes better in some other version.

If you never make the recipes you will still enjoy the book

Ok....some of the recipes in here you will never do.....But you need to know about them....If you are trully interested in how the black folks in the kitchen always had the nack this is the book you want....You will laugh and cry at her stories...but she is on the mark!......If you never make the recipes you will still enjoy the book....Buy it...and trust me!

A wonderful combination of recipes and stories

The Soul Of Southern Cooking is a wonderful combination of recipes and stories that evoke a time when black families had to make-do in the midst of hard times, yet were able to develop and enjoy a variety of delicious meals with a culinary tradition popularly referred to as "soul food". From Homemade Hog Head Souse; Neckbone and Macaroni Stew; Delta Fried Catfish; and Sunday's Fried Corn; to Boiled Chicken Feet and Legs; Stovetop Roast Beef; Celery Seed Dressing; Ten-Minute Oven Pecan Brittle; and Mrs. Hunter's Southern Tea Cakes, The Soul Of Southern Cooking fully lives up to its title and will prove a welcome and unique addition to the family cookbook collection.

Authentic Southern Cooking

I've had this book a while, but I just sat down tonight and re-read it cover to cover. I enjoyed it so much that I felt compelled to post a review.

The author, an African-American woman from the Mississippi Delta, writes the book in a way that presents the recipes alongside fun little snippets of African American culture in mid 20th century MS. The stories may be African-American, but I can assure you that, minus just a few exceptions, the recipes in this book are quintessentially and universally Southern - black and white. I'm personally not much of a cook, but I am from the South and grew up with my grandparents who were both old-school Mississippi folks. My grandfather gardened and my grandmother cooked most of the dishes in this book in a very similar way to how Mrs Starr spells them out. I can't recommend this book enough if you're looking for a good and simple take on true classic southern cooking.

Catfish, collard greens, cornbread, okra, peach cobbler... It's all here.
