Comforting Family Saga in the Marcia Willett Tradition
By Antoinette Klein
When it comes to multi-generational stories of quiet, unassuming Brits, Marcia Willett always can be counted on to deliver an engrossing tale. Combining the elderly and the youthful, she lovingly portrays three generations of family living simple, unadorned lives in relative tranquility. As always, however, she is able to inject the dark times that shake that tranquility and cast long shadows to the normal sunshine.
This story centers on Matt, a young and successful writer, who must deal with his life-long feelings of a missing link in his life. Midway through the book, the conclusion he reaches sounds rather preposterous until a Russian cat sculpture lends credence not to what he assumed was the answer to his lifelong feeling of loneliness but to the real story with all its heart-wrenching repercussions.
Supporting Matt in his explorations are Lottie and Milo, an oddly matched but charming couple, the outspoken Venetia, and Matt's sister Imogene with her husband Jules and their daughter Rosie. There is also Matt's love interest, the unfortunate Annabel whom readers will love to hate. Best of all, there is Pickles, a charming little kitten who wanders into Matt's life. Having read all of Marcia Willett's books filled with dogs, this cat person was delighted that she has at last added a feline to the menagerie.
Although the book had a major unanswered question for me that I won't mention as it would be a major spoiler, I still found this to be all I hope for in a Marcia Willett novel and would be thrilled to come across these characters again in a future story. The charming Summer House of the title is filled with possibilities and I hope to see it again.

Review of "The Summer House"
By Baby Boomer
Opening a book by Marcia Willett is like visiting an old friend. She does not disappoint with "The Summer House." Many of Ms. Willett's books are about people who become family to each other. Lottie has no children of her own, but her nurturing instincts provided stability for Matt and his sister Imogen during their childhood. Now a successful author, Matt is troubled by childhood pictures of himself that are unfamiliar. Imogen is a young wife and mother whose marriage hits a rough spot when Nick, her first love, re-enters her life. Nick is Lottie's nephew, the son of her brother-in-law Milo. Weak and self-centered, Nick has hit rock bottom financially.
The center of the novel is the Summer House, a charming cottage on the grounds of the home Lottie and Milo share. Forced to sell up to pay off Nick's debts, Milo offers the cottage to Imogen and her husband Jules. Imogen has her heart set on living there, but Jules wants to move closer to his veterinary practice. When Milo finds another buyer for the Summer House, Imogen is devastated.
On the fringes are Annabel, who is determined to make Matt love her, and Venetia, Milo's former mistress. Now widowed, Venetia is trying desperately to stave off the loneliness of old age.
The novel moves rapidly toward a shocker ending that leaves the reader longing for a sequel.

Odd
By PattyCakes
I've just discovered Marcia Willett and I've already read several books and truly enjoyed them. But The Summer House was my least favorite . It was full of characters , many of whom had odd relationships with some of the others. It was difficult to keep track of them sometimes and the thing was, I didn't care enough to try hard to work it all out . The only reason I kept plugging along was to see what the great mystery was and even that was odd when it was revealed . I'm sorry I spent so much time on this one.
