I used this book for graduate course about Optimal control. It is written in very good style, friendly for everyone who is new to the topic. Optimal control theory seems very difficult in the first view, but this book can help doing the first steps.
The book starts with explaining why optimal control theory is important. Then it builds static optimizing theory. After these simpler parts are clearly explained, the calculus of variations and the dynamic optimization is introduced. The last part is numerical techniques for finding optimal control.
In my opinion this book explains, for example, the deriving of Riccati equation in the best way I have ever read. I can say that I finally understand where Riccati equation comes from. :)
Every section of the book is supported with several examples that help understanding the theory.
I recommend this book for everyone who wants to understand the optimal control theory fundamentals. It is especially suitable for those who are new to the topic.

Some books on Optimal Control seem to be written for people who have been studying it and using it for decades. They use the notations of modern mathematics like set theory that I never learned the first time around. This book is different. It's an excellent introduction for those of us who know math, including vector and matrix calculus, but don't "speak the lingo" of professionals in the field. I've been looking for decades for a book that speaks MY language, and doesn't try to snow me with a lot of lemmas and proofs.

I think I've found it.

A Global Optimum of Optimal Control Books

This book is very reader friendly. It introduces Dynamic Programming, Variational Calculus, Pontryagin Minimum Principle and in its final section some Numerical Methods. Despite being published in the seventies, this is a truly GOOD CLASSIC (there are bad classics).

In my opinion, to the student, Kirk is superior to Citron, to Athans and to Lewis (this is more recent), that is, this book is more concerned about teaching people. Athans is more encyclopedic but much more time-consuming to read.

With Kirk you will really learn the elements of optimal control theory.

About the Author
George E. Hein is Professor Emeritus at Lesley University in the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences and Senior Research Associate with the Program Evaluation and Research Group (PERG), which he co-founded in 1976. During 2006–2007, Hein was president of Technical Education Research Centers (TERC), a non-profit educational research and development organization. He has been Howard Hughes Medical Institute Visiting Scholar, California Institute of Technology; Visiting Faculty Museum Studies Program, Leicester University; Fulbright Research Fellow, King’s College; a Research Associate at the Museum of Science in Boston; and Museum Guest Scholar at the Getty Research Institute. Dr. Hein was the founding director of the first Lesley University PhD program in Educational Studies and has been a major contributor to literature in the fields of visitor research and museum education for three decades, including the seminal books Learning in the Museum and Museums: Places of Learning (with Mary Alexander), articles in periodicals such as Journal of Museum Education, Curator: The Museum Journal, and The Exhibitonist, and chapters in several important edited volumes.

Scary Bedtime Stories for Computer Criminals

Orin Kerr doesn't write like a lawyer, he writes like a well versed writer. The book is a text manual for all things related to Computer Crime at the time of its writing. Since technology and law do not keep pace with each other, the book provides an outstanding reference for which case files to watch and which ones are not a concern. I used up two highlighter pens on this manual and I'm not a law student.

I've followed Orin Kerr's writings for several years now and really enjoy pulling out this book to see how digital crime law is supposed to work. It doesn't. There is a nice touch of humor layered thinly throughout the book. Dr. Kerr has a sharp wit and a sharper tongue. There is a great segment on the history behind each law and how far the courts have moved away from the original intent of those laws.

The folks at the NSA should have read this book a long time ago.

If you are interested in computer crimes, this is an excellent book. Orin Kerr is not only extremely knowledgeable on this subject, he has a fluid writing style that makes reading the book extremely easy.
