The Bible for any a cappella group

This book is basically the Bible for any a cappella group. As someone who's been lucky to have had a great career performing around the world with an a cappella group, I can tell you that this is the REAL deal. Whether you're in a school group, a pro group, or interested in putting together an amateur group, this book gives you the tools you need. Just look at the chapters and you'll see how thoroughly this covers all the topics you deal with in a real-life a cappella group today. (Um, there's even an entire chapter on FX pedals. Amazing.)

If you want to learn how to succeed in any field, you read the book written by THE undisputed expert in that field. That's what this book is for a cappella.

I'm confused why some other reviewers are focusing on a specific detail that they feel is missing in one of the history chapters. I think they're missing the point of this book. I'm recommending this book because, as a performer, I think it's the most valuable resource for any a cappella group performing today. The history part is interesting context -- for the other 42 chapters.

This is a solid resource for anyone in a cappella! The guides to every piece of running a group, using microphones, and other musical techniques of the modern era are a refreshing change of pace from most other a cappella resources that are available at the moment.

Extremely varied, rewarding survey of the field for a student of statistics/data analysis/statistical modeling/data mining. Treat each technique in some depth. I appreciated the way the 25 or so contributors explained the conceptual basis for a given approach, its purpose, and some of its pitfalls in addition to showing how it might be applied.

If you're the type who pokes through the menus of statistical software programs, gets curious about methods listed there, and wishes you had introductions more helpful than those offered in the Help files, ... you may well drool over this collection. It actually straddles the world of the applied researcher and mathematical statistician. It features many "star" authors responsible for inventing or popularizing particular methods over the past 30 years.

Covers tools for assessing cross-sectional outcomes (linear, logistic, and multi-level regression); longitudinal change (survival analysis, covariance structure modeling); how variables or subjects might cluster together (factor analysis, cluster analysis, multidimensional and circular scaling); and on and on and on. Just don't expect complete step-by-step instruction.

Good world-building

Set in 2050, Bluescreen is a futuristic dystopian story of what happens when you get too lax about privacy. In this futuristic world, nearly everybody is hooked up directly to the internet, via the djinni (which is an implant that helps the user log in directly, connected to their brains) and for Marisa, a gamer, it is a necessity. She and her friends, as well as nearly the whole city population, depend on it – much like how we depend on our cell phones right now. The concept of allowing something as invasive as an implant, particularly one that is linked directly to your brain and can influence your perception might seem ridiculous, but is well within the realm of possibility. We might very well sacrifice privacy for comfort, and this is kind of the central idea of the story.

When a friend of theirs takes a digital drug (that simulates a high in the user), but becomes infected with a malware, they realize the conspiracy runs deeper than a simple infected drive. Using their superior hacker skills, and all around programmer knowledge, they chase down leads to the origin of the drug; their methods are not entirely legit, which makes it even more thrilling. It is a fast-paced action thriller story, I’ll give it that, but it doesn’t make us invest much in the characters besides what they are wearing (trust me, you will know what they prefer to wear more than what their dreams are). Even Marisa, who is the protagonist, feels disconnected from the reader – why she does certain things, why she is drawn to a drug dealer, of all people, what is her idea of the future, what does she think about the hell that her city is.

While it doesn’t do much for the characters, the future is built up very well. Starbucks is still annoyingly present, there are rock-music hearing grandmas, pre-teens still look up their older sisters, cartels are very much in business (Mexico is now safer than the US) and oh, advertising is now super-personalized (shudder). The way Marisa and her friends use the system to their advantage is very entertaining, and a bit scary how they illuminate the pitfalls of each system. The privacy we take for granted can so very easily be exploited by someone who puts their mind to it; yeah, it is pretty terrifying. Overall, I would say, the book is long but interesting throughout; it is certainly enjoyable.

If you are a gamer who enjoys strong female characters, you'll love this book. Bluescreen was full of exciting tech and nerdy game references (fps and mmo in particular; the author said he was inspired in particular by League of Legends) that made me particularly gleeful. The cast was diverse - the lead character, Marisa, is of Mexican heritage, while there are also Chinese and Indian characters who are fully developed with their own agency. Sahara, one of Marisa's best friends, is a lesbian. And all of the girls are smart with technology: while Marisa and Sahara hack, Anja, another one of the group, enjoys modifying hardware. There's definitely no boys-only-STEM-fields here!

Aside from the diverse cast, Wells does a great job at world building. Mirador is a barrio in LA, and we get a raw and visceral look at how the world has changed in the future. In particular, the book examines the subject of privacy. It is exceedingly common now for everyone to have a device called a "djinni" implanted into their brain. This device works as a combo cell phone, computer, wallet, gps, house key, etc. Stores scan djinnis as you walk by and display advertising just for you on their windows. Marisa's house checks her in as soon as she walks in the door and alerts her family that she's home. Privacy as we know it is virtually gone.

But none of that bothers Marisa until a new drug surfaces in her area, the titular "bluescreen." Much like the bluescreen of death, it crashes your system when plugged into your djinni via a port at the base of your skull. The user experiences "safe, drug free" euphoria for ten minutes while their djinni deals with the crash. But Marisa and her friends discover that when their systems crash, they're open to infection... and it's exceedingly hard to run from danger when your djinni is online and you're open to the world.

This book offers a unique perspective on sensemaking through its consideration of the variety of ways in which Incident Response is managed by the Police. As an incident moves from the initial call handling to subsequent mobilization of response to first officer attending, a wide range of information is acquired, processed and shared, and the organization (and individuals who work within it) face challenges of making sense of the situation to which they are responding. Moving from routine incidents to large-scale emergencies, the authors explore how sensemaking is influenced and affected by the challenges of interoperability within and between organizations. In addition, the book develops a view of sensemaking which draws on the theory of distributed cognition, focusing in particular on the question of how the technology that is available to Police personnel can support (and sometimes thwart) their ability to make sense of the unfolding situation. The main argument in this book is that sensemaking is distributed cognition, and that cognitive processes involved in sensemaking are mediated through interactions with artifacts and other agents. Three perspectives of sensemaking as distributed cognition are presented: making sense with artifacts, making sense through artifacts, and making sense through collaboration.

About the Author
Dr Richard McMaster worked completed his Masters degree in Applied Psychology at Sheffield University before joining University of Birmingham as a research associate funded by the MoD Defence Technology Centre for Human Factors Integration. Over a period of some 9 years, he worked on a variety of projects related to military Command and Control and to the management of Emergency Response. In addition to this work, he registered as a part-time PhD student, developing a thesis on the ways in which the Police dealt with incidents. This research was complimented by his role as a Community Police Officer, which gave him access to operational policing as part of his daily work. He now works at Babcock International, Plymouth, where he conducts Human Factors investigations and Safety Audits on nuclear submarines. Professor Chris Baber joined the University of Birmingham in 1990 as a lecture on the MSc Work Design and Ergonomics programme. Prior to this, he completed his PhD at the Applied Psychology Unit at Aston University (with a thesis on speech technology for control room operations which was subsequently published by Ellis Horwood). His research focuses on human-computer interaction (particularly in terms of sensor-based interactions and wearable computers) and on distributed sensemaking (particularly in uncertain or complex domains). He has published over 80 refereed journal papers, as well as around 400 conference papers. He is the author / co-author of 6 books (for Ashgate, CRC Press, Ellis Horwood, Springer).

Extremely useful biochemistry text. Yes, USEFUL!!

This book shows how biochemistry courses can be made interesting and pertinent. I love the clinical symptoms and diagnoses boxes. Various biochemical processes are made relevant by linking them to symptoms and diagnoses. Remember in college when biochemistry was essentially a memorization exercise? Not so here. I am not a doctor or med student but I do have 24 hours of bio and take it from me this is a unique biochemistry text. The layout and design of the contents is very good. Well worth the price and deserving of shelf space in your library.

A Cleverly Designed Book

Some biochemistry books proceed to describe metabolic pathways with scant reference to the physiological context in which they occur and then fill the conceptual gap by including a chapter on regulation and integration of metabolism. Not this thoughtful and cleverly designed book. From the start the authors make it clear that they are going to tell us the story in terms of one crucial unifying concept: which pathways are activated or inactivated when we eat or when we fast?
With this approach the reader never loses sight of the big picture, ie, what's going on in the body at any particular time. And then, when we do reach the chapter on integration of metabolism, most of the work has already been done for us: the chapter then operates as a useful review of what we have already been told.
The book does not miss any opportunity to make us think in terms of the big picture, and furthermore, it is never afraid of saying something more than once if it needs to. Just one example to illustrate this point: Lipoprotein lipase. Action and properties of this enzyme are detailed in the context of digestion of chylomicrons (p 497), storage of TAGs in adipocytes (p 512), integration of metabolism (p 561) and the influence of insulin levels on gene expression of the enzyme (p 564).
The early introduction of the fed and starved states is also useful in other ways. The student perceives right away what the point is of learning those endless metabolic pathways and studies them with much more enthusiasm and not just thinking that biochemistry is but an unnecessary obstacle they have to overcome to get to the more clinical stuff (at least I'd like to think so!). Inspired by this book I have organized my course in that way and I am convinced that it is the best approach.

Simple, Lucid, yet encylopedic

This book is different from its contemporaries in many ways. First of all is written in a clinical approach format which is very interesting for medical students. Most of the biochemistry textbooks are dry and vast and difficult to grasp the information needed for a medico.
But the Marks helps to learn to use biochemistry in the process of Clinical Problem Solving. With a lot of diagrams and clear text it is easy understand.
The Clinical Material is presented in the form of real patients.
It is a student friendly text with which you can learn biochemistry in a funny way of solving the clinical cases.
It can be used as a main textbook for self study.
I strongly recommend the Marks for all medical students.

A Must in any Classical Violin Collection

The recording is crisp and superb. Ms Brown gives a very pleasing interpretation of this piece of Vivaldi's work. Her playing is clean, bright and energetic. The energy and moods are easily felt by the listener. I recommend this CD to both anyone who is just starting to enjoy classical music as well as the seasoned listener who enjoys the baroque era and is building a collection of Violin masters. When this CD was first released several years ago I searched high and low and couldn't find it. All sold out everywhere. I was so happy to learn Hanssler did another issue and now I finally have my own copy.

Neat Little Package

This book, which is a combination of music/text/pictures, is an excellent way to experience Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." Many people are familiar with the music, but how many know that sonnets were printed along with it, to help give imagery to the concertos as they're heard? This book takes that idea one step further, adding prints of paintings from artists who were active during Vivaldi's lifetime. All of these prints depict scenes from the various seasons, and all can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The aforementioned sonnets appear alongside the prints, and are listed in both English and the original Italian verse.

A few notes: the music comes in the form of a CD, and it is encased in plastic on the inside back cover of the book. One should be careful when removing the plastic, because if you remove too much of it, you won't have a place to store the CD. I cut a slit a few inches down so that I can remove the CD but also return it there when finished. There is no "jewel case" for the CD. On a positive note, an extra concerto was included on the CD, which is not part of "The Four Seasons." Vivaldi's "Concerto for Mandolin" etc. (RV 425) can be found at the end of the CD, an unexpected bonus!

Four stars. A nice little combination to be experiecned together - listen to the music, read the sonnets, and view the paitings. This makes an excellent inexpensive gift for a music lover (or even for yourself)!

"Easy to Follow, Even by a Newbie Score Reader"

This score is one of the easiest to follow whether in a concert hall or listening to a CD at home. One can also play directly from the score due its clear printing and spacey musical notes. This musical composition contains only 4-6 instrumental "roles" consisting of strings and bass continu; which makes it an excellent score to follow even by a newbie musician who just starts reading a full musical score;(in comparison to Berlioz's "symphonie fantastique" 5th movement, over 27 different musical instrumental roles playing simultaneously). The listener can easily find his way: bars are numbered and above the musical tones there are short descriptive sceneries comments which serve as "Mile Stones". Actually just by listening to the music one can easily navigate himself since Vivaldi's music is very descriptive and effective in creating vivid mental pictures of: storms, rain, thunder, chorus birds' songs, a dizzy drunkard; no listener will mistake one for the other.Score also contains the sonnets text, upon which the "The Four Seasons" violin concerto is based.
A slight drawback, the musical score is somewhat scanty on dynamics especially at critical stages as the climax of "thunder and lightning" in "Spring" 1st movement in bars: 44, 45, 47 (pages 4-5) "forte" instructions are omitted. Despite that fact this miniature score is still highly enjoyable and recommended.

It is rare that scholars of religion respond to the ideas of Campbell with fairness and depth of thought. This book is worth reading, its contributors great thinkers all, each of whom is able to place "the power of myth" into a greater perspective.
