Good IF you don't have the other books already

Well I made the mistake of buying this blindly without looking at the description because I have the 3 other books.

This book is a COLLECTION of the other photos from the other 3 books, and does NOT have a CD like the other books.

Don't get me wrong, I love the other 3 books, and I draw from them all the time. I actually use the CDs way more than the actual books however.

I would get this book if you are new to Scalera's photo reference books, and you are fine with images just in the book.

Great Book - Not For Kindle App

This book is great for pose reference. I found it in the store, I loved the information provided in it as well as the photographs of different poses/emotions/actions however I was disappointed when I downloaded it for my kindle app. I tried it on my galaxy tablet as well as my samsung phone and both devices did not have the beautiful HD pictures found in the book. I was really excited to have it on my tablet instead of the bound book because 1) the weight of the book is colossal in itself and 2) I'd figure my tablet would make it easier to actually look at the pictures... Unfortunately when you flip through the book the pictures are small and double tapping them brings up a pixelated version of what looked lovely in the store.

Rating 4 out of 5 stars because this IS a great book... I will re-purchase the physical copy but the sheer weight of it is something that will make me keep it at home. I refunded my digital copy because the details an artist may look for in this book do not transfer well in to a digital copy. I HIGHLY SUGGEST purchasing the physical copy although it is slightly more expensive and weighs a ton.

Kindle quality laughable

I wish I could un-buy this. The images are probably 1/2 quality of the 'look inside' preview given by Amazon. And there's NO way to zoom in or get it better quality!! Zooming with your browser just makes the images super pixelated. DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE.

I would consider buying the book in physical copy because the references (look) like they'd be good if they were big and high quality, but I feel so ripped off that I probably won't.

DON'T BUY IT.

A creepy mystery thriller with a bit of the paranormal to make it spooky. It's an atmospheric story as a man finally goes off the rails searching for the woman he loved in his youth who was kidnapped in front of his eyes. He's always sworn she was still alive somewhere and now she's speaking to him through the dead and he's chasing perverted ex-cons who are now out of prison trying to track her down. After killing the first one, the cops know he's finally snapped and he must find her before he's caught by the authorities. Some good twists and good black and white art with red blood make for some gruesome scenes. A freaky end and a fun horror/thriller read.

His quest leads him to murder, kidnapping and other bloody acts. Unrequited love and double-crosses also feature as Stephen does not know who to trust – quite rightly, it seems.

Engaging and entertaining, this has simple black-and-white illustrations embellished with red for blood – plenty of that. A one-off – worth a look

An OK story of someone flipping out years after a tragic event. The story made a lot of what is supposed to be shocking turns but I thought were just illogical. It jumps places more than once to the point I thought I was missing pages of the book. I didn't care much for the art but I did like the stark coloring, mainly black and white with just some touches of red.

both my kids are hooked

My kids are Minecraft junkies so when I saw this book I had to order right away. They come running every night before bed for story time now that I have this book. It only took us 3 days reading a few minutes each night to finish the book and now they are hooked. I have ordered a few more and I can see having all of the ones available soon! It kept them both interested and talking about what would happen next. They liked to stop and fill me in on what certain things were because I didn't know. It has been great family reading time and Dr Block is great at what he does. I wish it was a longer book but I am sure there will be more to come so that is OK =) (kids are age 5 and 11)

Feels like most of the book is missing...

This book's biggest flaw is that it does not deliver what is promised. The book itself is almost entirely filler and fluff. Sigils are not discussed in any detail. They do not even get there own chapter or even a definition. The same is true of spells. Thoughforms, or servitors, are, but there are no warnings of the dangers that come with them nor how to properly destroy them. The instruction it gives is very sparse and takes a lot of thinking to piece together. There is also a very strange and out of the blue chapter on tarot that really has no place in this work.
Overall, I would say skip this book. Google will probably be more helpful and in-depth.

I enjoyed this book, but I'm still not sure I have what it takes to make a servitor or a sigils. For all the simplicity of the instructions, I would probably mess up some where. Lol. Ty

Gr 4–6—It's the fall of 1964, just after the passage of the Civil Rights Act. Trip Westbrook lives with his parents in Jackson, MI. They have a black maid, Willie Jane, who serves as a sort of second mother to Trip and his sisters. When Trip invites Willie Jane's son, Dee, to join in for a game of football in the front yard, he unwittingly sets off a chain reaction of bigotry and harassment. But it's when he tries to bring Dee to lunch at the all-white country club that the tightly knit community turns inside out. This is an unusual book. There is a solid coming-of-age story and there is some football, though the cover design may throw off some readers: students who come looking for typical sports fiction might be disappointed. While a pick-up game is the occasion for the events that drive the plot, the sport itself is a small fraction of the story. At times the action is intense. True to usage at the time, Kitchings's narrator refers to African Americans as "colored" and "Negroes." The use of a more offensive epithet is limited, but does occur repeatedly. The scenes in which Trip is persecuted by the ignorant Bethune brothers (and their hateful father) are compelling and cringe-inducing. Nonetheless, the racist violence, verbal and physical, is historically significant and amount to a stinging indictment of the hypocrisies of the culture. About the Author
Taylor Kitchings’ roots in Mississippi run many generations deep, though it took him a while to circle back to them. As a college freshman, he recorded the original album Clean Break, now considered a collector’s item. As a junior, he wrote music for mallet and giant Möbius strip, performed at Manhattan’s Café La MaMa. In the years between his BA from Rhodes College and MA from Ole Miss, he traveled from Memphis to New York to Europe, writing and performing songs on piano.  He and his wife Beth have two children and live in Ridgeland, Mississippi, where he teaches English at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School.  His short story “Mr. Pinky Gone Fishing” was published in the collection Tight Lines from Yale University Press. Yard War is his first novel.

A compelling, important story.

This book is probably one of the best historical coming of age tales I have ever read. The author does a magnificent job of capturing the period, and gives his young narrator a voice that is authentic and compelling from page one. When I requested this book I had no idea what it was about. I was expecting just a common story of school conflict. What I discovered was a surprisingly effective examination of one boy's experience in the South as the country was trying to enact the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Yard War is a powerful story that will resonate with and educate young readers unfamiliar with the period. The language will likely startle and offend readers, as the characters use racial slurs that were common during this period. Their inclusion is not gratuitous and only adds to the authenticity of the story. The author perfectly captures Trip's feelings as he grows more aware of the world around him and makes that ever important discovery that adults don't have all the answers and that sometimes their answers are wrong.

With characters that are well developed, dialogue filled with energy, and a huge amount of heart, this story of A Yard War brings a very important part of history to life for children in grades 5 to 8. It's hard to believe that this is the author's first novel. I will be eager to see what he offers up next. This is one you shouldn't miss.

For the Target Audience, Excellent Perspective on History and Race Relations Following the Civil Rights Act of 1964 ...

For the target audience – readers age 8-12 years of age - “Yard War” provides a very relatable perspective on history and on race relations following the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Taylor Kitchings understands readers in the target audience and writes with knowledge of the subject matter and the attitudes that were prevalent in the Deep South during the mid-1960’s.

A seventh grader, Trip Westbrook lives in Jackson, Mississippi. The son of a doctor, his only personal contact with “…colored people …” is with “…Willie Jane…Meemaw’s maid or a waiter at the club or a guy at the Texaco…” Naïve about race relations and the attitudes of others, Trip thinks of Willie Jane not as working for the family, but as “…my other mama…” He believes that if someone were to visit his neighborhood, his school, or his church, they would find nice people not people “…trying to hurt colored people…” When Trip invites Willie Jane’s son Dee to play football with him, Trip’s friends at first resist but because of his skill, eventually accept Dee. As Trip and Dee develop a deeper friendship, the conflict with Trip’s grandparents and the threats toward the Westbrook family intensify. Circumstances result in their taking a firm stand against racism.

Using the first person narrative in “Yard War”, Taylor Kitchings creates a very personal and very compelling story. Trip is maturing and beginning to have more his own opinions about what is right and what is wrong. Yet, Trip retains some of the naiveté – he believes his Pawpa when he is told that if he found a good “colored person” he would take him to lunch at the Country Club. When Trip takes Dee to the Club, he is surprised that Pawpa does not mean what he said.

“Yard War” is an excellent story and one that teaches some of the history of race relations to the target audience. It depicts generational conflicts realistically and the personal sacrifices that resulted for many affected individuals. The hypocrisy of church-going individuals, including his grandparents, who taught children “…Jesus loves all the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white …” troubles Trip. Trip’s mother represents those individuals whose dilemma is that they are caught between respecting their parents and doing what they know is right. His father, whose background is not one of privilege, wants to protect his family. Dr. Westbrook must decide between whether to do so at the cost of compromising his personal beliefs and integrity or whether to take a stand against injustice and prejudice.

Language, racial references, and attitudes portrayed through “Yard War” are realistic. While the terms used in the novel are not used today, they were common at the time the novel takes place. “Yard War” provides an excellent opportunity for parents to discuss with their children the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the changes in attitude that have taken place and the changes that have yet to be effected.

I got this for my son. My son is black and is being raised by white parents so I thought this wonderful story would help him understand the legacy of racism in America just a bit but the evening news these days seems to also accomplish that task. We've had some wonderful discussions about race as he gets through this story. Taylor Kitchings has written a wonderful story.

Reviewed by Andre ToomThere are different books on my shelf. Some are large like dinosaurs: these are textbooks. Others are much smaller, but their educational value may be greater. For example, Kordemsky's book [3] contributed a lot to Russian childrens' interest in mathematics although its English edition fits in a hand. The book I am going to discuss fits in a coat pocket, but it speaks in an interesting and understandable way about number theory, combinatorics, game theory, geometry, and calculus, to say nothing about magic tricks, puzzles and other digressions. What is most important is that whenever Vakil starts to discuss something, he never leaves the reader without a piece of exact, rigorous knowledge. This is a book about mathematics, not about its fuzzy placebo.Ravi Vakil received several olympiad prizes and now is an instructor at Princeton University. This is his first book, and in it he tries to share his expertise with his readers. He tries to encourage! ! curiosity, a sense of beauty, and the love of knowledge. This is a book I would like to have read as a boy. Why? Because it addresses the normal curiosity of children. It contains many good problems, facts, and stories. It is a mixture of just those ingredients which are most useful for children. Vakil enjoys ideas that seem simple if you already know them, but may seem paradoxical if you don't. One of them is presented as a card trick (p. 44): I ask you to shuffle a deck of cards thoroughly. Then I ask for them back (face down). Carefully examining the backs of the cards, I separate them into two piles. I then claim that, through the power of magic, I've made sure that the number of black cards in the first pile is the number of red cards in the second pile!The explanation starts as follows: "While pretending to exmine the backs of the cards, I was simply " Can you complete this explanation? I remember that as a boy I was quite fond of various tricks and had a notebook wh! ! ere I wrote as many of them as I could find. Although Vakil's book is intended to be recreative and facultative, it contains many facts that are indispenable for mathematical literacy, including: Criteria for divisibility. Those for 2, 3 and 7 are proved; other proofs are left for the reader (pp. 23, 29). Let g(x) denote any polynomial in x. Then the remainder when g(x) is divided by x a is g(a). 2 is irrational (p. 121). There are infinitely many primes (p. 124). Heron's formula for the area of a triangle (p. 160) The harmonic series diverges (p. 180).Each of these facts is not only proved, but accompanied with several variations that are presented as problems or comments. Sometimes they lead into quite substantial mathematics. There are many "local" proofs, which also help to develop the readers' "proof sense." I like the following most:The "hypervolume" of a "four-dimensional sphere" of radius r is H = (r^ 2)^2/2. Can you use a method similar to that of Par! ! t 1 and Part 4 to find the "surface volume/" (p. 81). This book contains several "personal profiles" of gifted youngsters with whom Vakil became acquainted at olympiads. Vakil writes several lines about how they found their way into mathematics, for example: "J. P.'s curiosity is typical of the young mathematicians profiled in this book" (p. 41), "It was at this time that Katy discovered the tremendous enjoyment she gains from solving problems" (p. 54). Vakil cites one talented student's advice: "Do math for math's sake, not because your parents will be proud of you, or because people will think you are smart" (p. 143).More than once Vakil stresses that mathematics is beautiful. In his preface he writes: "Math is a uniquely aesthetic discipline; mathematicians use words like beauty, depth, elegance, and power to describe excellent ideas" (p. 10). When starting to speak about combinatorics, he writes: "More important (to me, at least) is its aesthetic appeal" (p. 45). Before p! ! resenting the proof of irrationality of 2, he writes: "It is also extremely beautiful. its elegance lies in its simplicity" (p. 121). Is Vakil alone in stressing the beauty of mathematics? By far not. He refers to G. H. Hardy who said similar things in his A Mathematician's Apology. (p. 120).Here is the last problem in the book:On a remote Norwegian mountain top, there is a huge checkerboard, 1000 squares wide and 1000 squares long, surrounded by steep cliffs to the north, south, east, and west. Each square is marked with an arrow pointing in one of the eight compass directions, so (with the possible exception of some squares on the edges) each square has an arrow pointing to one of its eight nearest neighbors. The arrows on squares sharing an edge differ by at most 45. A lemming is placed randomly on one of the squares, and it jumps from square to square following the arrows. Prove that the poor creature will eventually plunge from a cliff to its death.Is this a "real! ! -world" problem? Certainly not. There is no such checkerboard in the mountains of Norway. According to some educational theories, students should not be interested in this problem, but they are. In fact this problems was invented by a secondary-school student Kevin Purbhoo. Is Kevin abnormal? If he is, I am also. Bobrov's book [1], which mixes mathematics with fantasy, accompanied all my childhood, and I lilked its fantastic element most! Vakil writes about this problem: "Although Kevin did not know at the time, this problem anticipates several subtle and important results in topology" This is typical of Vakil's book: recreational mathematics leads to deep and important ideas. It deserves many readers.There is a good-old editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" an answer to a girl named Virginia who asked the editor of the New York Sun in 1897, "Is there a Santa Claus?" It seems to me that some modern educators have lost the pathos of spirituality expressed there! ! , which makes humans human. It is in human nature to be interested in abstractions. The human ability to think without and immediate material gratification is at the base of civilization. In this context, Vakil's book might be called "Yes, Virginia, Math is Beautiful."References1. A rare beauty !

The author himself is renowned in math circles for his various achievements like gold medals at IMO ! and 4 times Putnam fellow ! No wonder this book is such beautiful rarety. I was totally impressed by the handling of the topics and the problem-solving approaches the author has chosen to explain. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in accelerating his knowledge in maths for a competitive exam like ARML, USMO. IMO etc. Definitely not for fire-side reading so it aint worth your time if you have only casual interest in maths. This book is intended for serious kids.I'd given it 10 stars for such marvelous insight.

Insightful, interesting, excellent!

Ravi Vakil gives a delightful introduction of some of the more interesting yet enigmatic areas of mathematics. Most of us are not too familiar with the cardinality of numbers or Galois Theory. However, the author presents these fascinating topics in such a lucid and insightful manner, that one becomes easily engrossed. Also, I particularly enjoyed reading the profiles of the young mathematicians - it was quite inspiring! Furthermore, the problems at the end of each section are thought provoking; many do not have complete solutions, and thus encourage the reader to think hard about them. As the title implies, it is NOT a textbook, but rather a compilation of scattered "lectures." It is a great book for the talented math reader, and students who want to explore some mathematics outside the general curriculum.

Excellent --- for middle school to very early high school

I understand that Ravi Vakil has a great record in the IMO and Putnam competitions. When I read the reviews and the back cover on a web site which explicitly stated: "Reveals some of [Vakil's] most powerful problem solving strategies," -- Well, of course I bought it immediately. Unfortunately most of the things in the book are quite elementary as far as problem solving goes. It is meant as an exposure for people who haven't seen these things so far(particularly talented jr high /middle school and early high school). Of course you will find some very interesting facts in here (and the rare mistakes-- Euler's Formula being called DeMoivre's Theorem) and will leave many young students in awe as Mr. Vakil shows off some beautiful mathematics. It is a good book, but I gave it only 3 stars because I expected much more( much more "powerful" stuff as the backcover said). If your a very experienced problem solver you will find many of the things in this book trivial(you will find some gems though), but if your a beginner with some talent, then you will love this book.
