Of Gutenberg himself little is known, at least not until the 1440s, when the native of Mainz, Germany, began to apply techniques he had learned in the coin-making trade to the development of the printing press. (He had observed the work of men "who could carve a letter in steel that had at least six, and perhaps sixty, times the resolution of a modern laser printer.") His genius, writer John Man tells us, lay not only in the invention of the handheld mold for making type but also in developing a reliable technique for binding that type into a form, all of which required years of trial and error. In the fifteenth century, when Europe was not long out of the medieval age, the two halves of the Roman Empire were spiritually divided. Within Europe, the church was plagued by infighting among different factions of the clergy. The Renaissance had just begun. Europe was on the brink of a cultural revolution when a catalyst named Gutenberg invented the printing press. In this study, Man puts Gutenberg and the printing press in historical context by giving detailed pictures of the political situation in Europe at the time, on an international scale all the way down to a city level. He gives technical details on how a printing press works, and how to craft the movable type. In addition he gives a biography of the man, and attempts to construct a chronology of his publications. Man offers much speculation to fill holes in the historical record, but is very clear about what is generally accepted fact, and what is not. Compared to the printing press revolution, the Internet one is small potatoes. Before Europe's first printed book in 1455, information was carried in hand-copied volumes so expensive they could be owned only by priests and aristocrats. Then in "a historical eyeblink," John Man writes, a book that took two months to copy by hand could be turned out at the rate of 500 a week. Little is known with certainty about Johann Gutenberg, the man behind the change, not even his year of birth (traditionally given as 1400). But Man suggests that Gutenberg may have developed printing technology while trying to cash in on a craze in the 1430's for small mirrors, used by pilgrims to capture the healing powers of relics at Charlemagne's tomb. The mirror-making venture bogged down in legal disputes between Gutenberg and his partners, but surviving court records contain mysterious references to "another secret art" -- perhaps the hand-held mold that could mass-produce metal type. Gutenberg intended to make a fortune publishing the first universal missal, but when clerics could not agree on an authorized text, he settled on his second choice, the Bible. By 1500, more than 15 million books had been printed in Europe. At the heart of Man's enchanting narrative is Gutenberg's place as an early capitalist, an entrepreneur, deprived of patrician status by his mother's modest background, who set out to strike it rich in business. -- MICHAEL DONOHUE (New York Times Book Review, August 18, 2002)

Loved it until the end

Little is know about the history of Gutenberg's invention, and the history of the man himself. John Man does an excellent job of bringing this story to life. Placing Gutenberg in historical context, and infusing the tale with rich background color to give you a feel of 15th century Europe.
But at the end of the book there is a very protracted story of how Martin Luther used printing to further his cause. This goes on way to long, twenty plus pages. If I wanted to read so much about Luther, I would get a book about Luther!
If it was not for this last part, I would easily have given this book five stars. I am a printer by profession, and I also teach about printing at a local community college. I love printing history, and this book is now a proud member of my library on the subject.
Man spins a very good tale about the birth of this profession, that has not been covered very well before. Writing with such zeal and humor as if he is speaking directly to this reader.

Primarily Historical Secondarily Biographical

I have had the privilege of seeing pages of a Gutenburg Bible. There is only one complete Bible that remains in a private collection, and the balance are part of the inventories of museums or places like The Library of Congress. An exceptional example can be found at The Morgan Library in NYC, and thanks to a special group of people the work can also be viewed on the internet. To give an idea of the value of one of these Bibles, the last single page I saw at an antiquarian book show was priced at $30,000. If an entire book were to come to auction the price it would bring would be measured in many millions of dollars. William Gates, CEO of Microsoft, paid in excess of $35,000,000 for the Leicester Codex, a one of a kind notebook from the pen of Leonardo Da'Vinci. That is the record ever paid for a single, "book".
As momentous a contribution that Gutenburg gave the world details about his life are few. Even when he had established himself as a printer of some renown, there are many years, and even groups of years that are blank, or filled by only supposition. There are times that the recording of a lawsuit is all that are available to document where he was at a given point in time. And as with many inventions that have changed the course of history, there are the usual arguments over who actually invented what, and then there are the pretenders that history had accepted for centuries.
Those expecting a biography of the inventor will not be satisfied by this book. This is less the fault of the writer than the lack of documentary evidence about the subject. What the reader is given in great detail is a description of history before during and after the printing press became a reality. The Bible that is so routinely associated with the name of Gutenburg has certain volumes that are not only exceptional for the type but also for the decoration that was produced. The fragment of the picture on the cover only hints at the beauty of these books.
And this is the greatest criticism I have of this book. The work of Gutenburg was visual, and in many examples exceptionally beautiful. I cannot reconcile these facts with a book that offers a single black and white photograph of one page of this historic Bible. The invention of the press that Gutenburg created is exceptional, and exceptionally complicated. All the reader is offered is a brief description on how complicated it is, and two pages with a handful of drawings that raise more questions than they answer. The author should have let readers decide how much effort they wished to invest to understand this invention rather than presuming readers would be pleased with the barest of details.
If you have never read anything about this topic, the book will serve you better than if you already have knowledge in excess of the name of the man and what he created. The author also makes note of the idea that someday all books could be in electronic form and stored in, "hyperspace". I hope he meant cyberspace.

I'm in to chapter 29 or so and I've got to say that this is just a masterful guide to living your life as an also-ran.

Bregman offers stellar advice like 'stop setting goals', stop arguing, ignore people who betray you because, well, people aren't perfect.

It's just disgusting.

All of that aside, the narrator of the CD version even sounds like he's whining through the whole thing.

There are some interesting insights (hence the 2 instead of 1 stars) but on the whole, this is a waste of time.

Don't buy this. Instead go for:

- "The Strangest Secret" by Earl Nightingale (or better yet, listen to it. the man's voice is amazing.)
- "As A Man Thinketh" by James Allen
- "The Richest Man In Babylon" by George S. Classon

Or the granddaddy of them all:

"Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. Yeah the language is a little archaic and at times, hokey. But it's a stellar work.

Swedish crime writer Mankell has taken U.S. publishing by storm over the last decade, launching a genre-altering invasion of his fellow Scandinavian mystery authors and (with other Europeans such as John Harvey and Andrea Camilleri) reinterpreting the notion of the hard-boiled hero. No longer the strong, silent, stand-up guy of American fiction, the new European hero, led by Mankell's Kurt Wallander, faces the horrors of the modern world with a sagging spirit, nearly overwhelmed. Lately, though, Mankell has rested Wallander, focusing instead on other cops in and around Ystad, Sweden, including Wallander's daughter, Linda, the star of Before the Frost (2005). Now the series returns to Wallander but backtracks in time. The Man Who Smiled, written in 1994, was the fourth in the series but is only now appearing in the U.S. It finds Wallander on the verge of quitting the Ystad police force; then a friend who had asked for his help is killed, and the would-be retiree is compelled to go back to work. The case that unfolds, involving a the head of a multinational corporation who traffics in the selling of human organs, opens yet another window on the unimaginable horrors of modern life, but this time Wallander responds with new resolve. excellent, but if you are new to Wallander Mysteries, read them in sequence...

Other reviewers said all that had to be said. I have one suggestion to readers that are new to Kurt Wallander Mystery Novels. Read them in sequence. Unfortunately, they were translated to English out of order. Here is the correct order: 1. Faceless Killers (1991 2. The Dogs of Riga (1992) 3. The White Lioness 1993 4. The Man Who Smiled 1994 5. Sidetracked 1995 6. The Fifth Woman 1996 7. One Step Behind (1997 8. Firewall (1998 9. Before the Frost (2002) and The Troubled Man (2009), the last case of Wallander. Also, consider another 'non-Wallander' mystery: The Return of the Dancing Master (2000) and The Man From Beijing (2010). I hope I didn't miss anything...

The writing is quite good, the character development is well above average

After seeing the Wallender mysteries on TV, this is the first book in the series that I read. The writing is quite good, the character development is well above average, and the plot, though quite engaging, seems, like a lot of other mystery novels, a bit far-fetched (though I'm aware that such things do actually happen).

I will probably read other novels in the series and, readers of this review should know, I seldom give five stars. So four stars is pretty good.

The reason I didn't give five stars is that unlike some mystery writers such as Dick Francis, Michael Connelly, CJ Box, Paul Doiron, and William Kent Krueger, where I really come to enjoy the "company" of the main characters and can't wait until I can spend more time with them in the next novel, after finishing this book I didn't feel like I was "missing" Wallender and anxious to "spend more time with him."

Still, a pretty good book.

A wonderful, subtle, minimal to no violence author, who meticulously gathers minute clues into a slowly clear picture

Great story; too bad there aren't enough more of his fine, subtle, realistic novels. Great series to get if you're looking for a new author; only the first one is a bit weak, and that's because I'd read #'s 4 and 6, by which he'd really honed his craft. Google a list that shows them in order, and try to go that way; there are subtle, infrequent mentions of aspects of cases from a prior book. Not significant; each stands very well on it's own. But, the detective, and his daughter, and his father are aging as the novels progress, and that's reflected in the narrative, and minimally in some of the plots.
