No book covers the game of hockey as clearly and entertainingly. The book is organized in question and answer format which makes it easy to understand and to quickly reference any fact "on the fly". Kids' Book of Hockey is definitely not just for kids - I've been a hockey fan for over 10 years and am amazed at how much this book has taught me. Thanks to this book, I now (finally) know everything that's going on when I watch a game.

I couldn't put this book down. I've never stayed up all night reading a book. I felt such sympathy for the characters of this book that I just wanted to reach out and touch them. For anyone who has ever felt their love of another was forbidden due to what was acceptable, you'll love this book. I love the timeframe of the book, the story line, the characters, and the love scenes were so SWEET EVERLASTING. This is the first Patricia Gaffney book that I have read, but it definitely won't be the last.

Tyler is the new town doctor, sensitive and kind, lively and intelligent. Carrie responds to Tyler's kindness with shy, yet unabashed adoration, but Tyler fights his growing attraction for this young innocent. Of course she doesn't belong to his social class, but the scruples Tyler struggles with are more complicated than mere social convention; Carrie is fragile, innocent, damaged, and mute, and it would be morally reprehensible of him, he believes, to succumb to the passionate feelings she sparks within him and take advantage of her seemingly uncomplicated trust. What Tyler isn't aware of, however, is that Carrie's heart is strong enough for the both of them. A very tender and memorable story.

Did not want it to end!!

Never before was a book so aptly named as this one. The reason I say this is because this was the sweetest story I have ever read. It is a heart-wrenching story and so beautifully written it makes the heart ache.
This is the story of Dr. Tyler Wilkes and Carrie Wiggins. Tyler is the wealthy son of an old, aristocratic Philadelphia family. He gives up a life of wealth and privilege to become a doctor agaisnt his mother's wishes. He moves to the small town of Wayne's Crossing to take over the practice from the town's previous doctor who is gravely ill.
Carrie is a poor girl who lives in a cabin with her abusive stepfather high up on High Dreamer mountain above the small town of Wayne's Crossing. Upon meeting Carrie, Tyler is not immediately attracted to her in a romantic sense but in a professional sense. Carrie, you see, is mute and Tyler wants very much to help her bur Carrie continually refuses it. Tyler begins to think there's more to the pretty, shy Carrie than meets the eye. Slowly and little by little Tyler gets to know Carrie even though she cannot speak. Once he gets to know her, Tyler is amazed that despite her handicap and the hardships she has suffered Carrie is high spirited, kind, strong and able to take pleasure in the little things in life. Eventually, they become lovers and in spite of his attraction and growing affection for her, Tyler cannot turn his back on what has been ingrained in him since birth: he must marry according to his social status. In short, marrying Carrie would be beneath him.
Carrie wears her heart on her sleeve and it's no secret to Tyler that she loves him without condition or any strings attached. Carrie has learned early on not to expect too much from life but deep inside she can't quench the budding hope that Tyler will learn to love her as much as she loves him.
This is a beautiful, emotional love story full of twists and turns and breathtaking romance. Ms. Gaffney makes the characters come alive in such a way that you feel as if you personally know them. I am almost tempted to say this is my favorite Gaffney romance. However, having read most of her backlist I can't pick just one because all of her books are so radically different from one another. I guess they're all my favorites, each and every one. If you love romance, do yourself a favor and pick up this book or any book by this brilliant author. :)

About the Author
After obtaining degrees in sociology and law, Mark Bouton entered the FBI, where for 30 years he investigated terrorism and criminal cases across America. He nabbed killers, kidnappers, con men, bank robbers, and embezzlers, and he played a key role in identifying the Oklahoma City bombers. A great read and an even better resource.

Mark Bouton has written a book that transcends all levels of society. Whether you're a professional, student, housewife, regardless of your age, this book gives a pragmatic insight into why and how people tell lies. The author discusses what to look for in terms of speech patterns and body language. What's really practical is that anyone can benefit from reading this tome. It contains common sense advice on how to deal with your boss, co-workers, even your children. This is a book that is not only interesting but useful. It should be required reading, particularly for police officers.

amazing look into lies and the people who tell them

I'm a clinical psychologist/mystery writer and recommend this book whenever I give a workshop. I've also recommended it to several clients. It's a terrific look into lie detection--it's packed with information, it's timely and it's entertaining. Absolutely a must-read. The author, Mark Bouton, is a retired FBI agent and is one of the few people I know who has the "street cred" to sift through all the scientific studies, add his own anecdotes, draw on his experience with the Bureau and come up with a book that is highly readable and worth keeping as a reference book. It is a classic in the field. I also enjoy his novels--they're action-packed with white-knuckle suspense and enough plot twists and turns to keep you turning the pages.

Mark's How to Spot Lies' is so very informative, backed up with pictures of facial expressions & body language to demonstrate what he is telling his readers. His background explains so much about his knowledge of his subject (or/and) subjects. His examples are excellent & in today's world of computer language, mobile phones, cyberspace,( just a small sample of what's out there) & the capabilities of all of these expose us to all manner of falsification. The more knowledge we have to help us see thru the subterfuge, the better. It's a book to read & re-read. Keep it by your phone or computer & refer to it often. Thanks Mark!

Engaging and Edifying...

This mammoth undertaking called, The Songs that Saved Your Life is an ultra-detailed extremely meticulous look into the production of virtually every Smiths song in existence. It's simultaneously fascinating and annoyingly detailed.
How much you'll enjoy this book ultimately depends on the depth of your fandom and your interest in the Smiths' musical production.
The Songs that Saved Your Life is engaging and edifying, however, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.
This book is not for you if:
1. You're only looking for Behind the Music / E! True Hollywood Story type gossip.
2. You're only looking for lyrical interpretations of Smith songs.
3. You're more interested the big picture rather than smaller details.
Despite whatever feelings you may have for Mike Joyce, he actually writes a touching forward for the book -- mind you not as brilliant at Mick Middle's forward for Morrissey's Manchester -- but surprisingly optimistic and celebratory of the Smiths' legacy.
The book lists about 80 Smiths songs in the order of the finished studio mater tape. To say "lists" is a bit of an understatement as The Songs that Saved Your Life is more or less the Encyclopedia Brittanica of Smiths songs.
Not only does it catalog singles and B-sides, it includes detailed information on Smiths songs that have never seen the light of day by the general public. The most famous of these songs is, "A Matter of Opinion" which was uncovered by author Simon Goddard while listening to Mike Joyce's own master tapes in preparation for writing the book.
There are also a number of untitled instrumentals produced by John Porter, Grant Showbiz and Stephen Street that are detailed as well.
Each of the songs in the book lists the day & place it was recorded, who it was produced by and the format & month of the first UK release (admittedly a bit confusing from an American POV). Next comes the detailed history of the song, e.g. how the song came about, what influenced the song, musical and or lyrical drafts, anecdotes, UK chart placement, song keys, quotes from band members (including Morrissey), Rough Trade / Geoff Travis reaction and headlines and controversies.
Now just when you thought you've learned everything possible about 'Wonderful Woman' for example, there are three more sections regarding the song's life in concert, on television and on the radio. The concert information is current to Morrissey's 2002 where Moz performed several Smiths song live. It did, however, feel somewhat eerie seeing in print information about a tour that just ended a couple months ago.
What's good:
The book can be read chronologically, or out of order. Skip the songs you hate (as if you'd actually hate any Smiths song) or pick a song you lurve and read up on it. You do, however, get a better sense of continuity having read it cover to cover.
Short chapters - good for those of us with attention deficit disorder.
Extremely detailed - More than you ever really wanted to know
The Verdict: Undoubtedly Simon Goddard has created a masterpiece. By the time I got to page 250 I'm sure my IQ went up a point or two. The vast amounts of data included in the book are incredible. If you're a Smiths fan and you haven't bought this book yet. I have to ask, what are you waiting for?

Awesome band - awesome book!

If, like me, you believe that The Smiths were the greatest band that ever existed then you don't merely NEED this book, you simply CANNOT LIVE without it! There have been loads of books about The Smiths and Morrissey so far but what's great about this one is the fact that it really goes into the songs and there's so much information that's never been made public before. Not just the unreleased music and lyrics (which is fascinating) but a lot of where Morrissey borrowed lyrical ideas from and who/what inspired them. Like did you know that William It Was Really Nothing was about Billy MacKenzie of The Associates? Or that I Won't Share was about Morrissey's old friend Linder Sterling? Or that I Keep Mine Hidden was Morrissey's personal letter to Johnny Marr as the band was splitting? Well if you didn't you need to read this!
Because every song is listed in the order it was written you really get a sense of how The Smiths grew as a band and how the break up was inevitable. It really makes you want to go back and listen to the songs again and hear new things. Maybe it isn't the sort of book you'd read cover to cover, more as a reference guide, but if you love The Smiths you simply cannot afford to miss out on this. Even if you only quite like them, I think reading this book will really make you appreciate the brilliance of the songs and the lyrics and may well turn you from a partial fan into a raving Smiths maniac!
All in all Songs That Saved Your Life is an awesome book about an awesome band. Like it says on the back cover - apart from the records themselves there is nothing else you need on this subject!

At last an interesting, well documented book about The Smiths, it's important to remark that it's quite objective, it seems with some other books about them (yes, Rogan ones) that the author more than trying to tell the story of this seminal band, is trying to slaughter them as persons.
This book is not about El Mozzer grand parents, nor trying to show him as a fake, or taking part on a 3 way high court war, it's just about what matters: some of the best pop music ever done, how each song developed trough time, adding interesting stories around them.
Oh dear little boys, how empty seems the world since you are not around anymore...
It's a must if you dare to think yourself as someone with taste.

While I’m no programmer or a coder of any type, I can tell you this book has some great information in it. As well as the fact that it’s relatively easy to learn from due to the fact that it doesn’t just give you some line(s) of code, tell you to use it, tell you what it does and then go on to the next section. It shows you exactly what the code does and explains it in full detail, which is the way I am able to learn.
