Poet Cecil Giscombe is known for his exceptional meditations on place. His long poem, "Giscome Road," examines locations in northern Canada that are named after his relative John Robert Giscome, a 19th-century Jamaican miner and explorer.

Giscombe's book--part map, poem, illustration--features his eccentric style in expressing language. In print, his writing occasionally looks like journal notes, with altered spellings accentuating the construction of the line and the meaning of the phrase ("I am a place, she sd, nowhere."). Yet even with alterations, the poems are clear and visionary--a stream of family that the poet never knew: "And water has got its way: /the name rode along being / a commotion."

The long poem is broken into five sections that each represent a portion of the poet's journey into the past. And like any search for one's past, "place" reveals more about itself than about the bloodline of those who lived there: "no telling / how it appears, no word for the way blood arrives." Giscombe's words reveal an explorer-poet of great heart. --Susan Swartwout

Poetry to read and read again.

Giscome Road is a poem of location and its ambiguity, of presence (remembered as name) and its antecedents. It's a road trip (there are maps for navigation) with a jazz soundtrack, riding the edge from Jamaica to British Columbia. It's a "Roots" quest and a metaphysical query. It's about blackness as landscape. And, best of all, the language is exquisite; from the first line, "The song's a commotion rising in the current," to the last, "You never know what name the periphery's going to start with." Giscombe Road is the most intriguing book of "poetry" that I've read this year.

About the Author
JACK S. EMERY, J.D. Jack Emery practiced as a litigation attorney in Phoenix, Arizona for nearly twenty years before taking up a second career as a community college professor. He graduated first in his class from the Arizona State University College of Law. He has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in biomedical engineering in addition to his law degree. Jack is a licensed patent attorney.

Dr. Linda L. Edwards was an attorney and author, having written or co-written seven textbooks in the legal assistant field. She was an instructor in the Justice and Legal Studies Department at Phoenix College for 24 years until her retirement in January 2001. During her tenure as program director, she was responsible for creating dozens of new classes in both legal assisting and criminal justice.

J. Stanley Edwards has been an Arizona attorney since 1975, serving as a general practitioner for all but two of those years. He has co-authored five textbooks on paralegal studies with his wife, Dr. Linda Edwards. He is a judge pro tem in the civil division of the Maricopa County Superior Court and was a judge pro tem in what is now the Family Court. Additionally, he is a certified arbitrator in the District Court of Arizona.

Excelent for the "do it yourself" litigant

This book is an excellent "nuts and bolts" guide to civil procedure, and the preparation of court papers. It helped me successfully defend myself from a money grab by an ex girlfriend regarding a jointly owned ranch. I fired my expensive lawyer after 18 months, and settled my case in 6 months. She and her lawyers were killing me with legal expenses. By filing my own motions, (motion for protection, motion to compel, discovery demands, motion for sanctions, etc), I was able to reverse that trend, and "expense" her into a favorable settlement.

Suprisingly I enjoyed this learning experience. This book was full of information, examples, and proceedures. It takes time to get thru this study but the information you get will be the basics that will stick with you.

Metre, Rhythm and Verse Form gave me all the tools necessary to understanding poetry and poetry criticism. This book helped to clarify a number of abstruse terms which would have been otherwise both frightening and VERY confusing.

Put history into perspective for me

At last an accessible history of the world. Once I started to read this book I could not put it down. There are some less complimentary reviews but I feel they are a little harsh. Andrew Marr was able to put into context a whole raft of cultures and how they did or did not interact. I cannot count the number of times I thought to myself "ah, that is why this happened". It was as if lots of little lights came on and joined up a map of history.
The clarity of writing and the little side comments made this a very enjoyable and informative read. If history had been taught in a similar way when I was at school, I would have been a very different student.

I really enjoyed reading this book

This is my first non-academic world history read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Marr weaves together different countries, cultures and their leaders smoothly page after page, often with a unifying theme in mind. Sometimes one can catch a bit of fluffy rhetoric but this does not detract from the experience even if the reader is only trying to gain new knowledge. The book is easy to read yet filled with detail. Marr definitely leans towards writing about new cultures and peoples or towards existing history with new historical information. I felt the book to be a bit short even though it's over 500 pages; there was certainly a huge skipping of historical events but Marr himself addresses this in the beginning of the book as inevitable of anyone trying to tackle a subject so daunting as world history. But Marr (or his editor) got it right when he named the book simply "A" history of the world (not "The") because it is merely one of many world history books that should be read for anyone serious enough about understanding the subject.

World history book that actually covers the world, unlike other "world" history books that focus primarily on Europe and the US

I was trying to find a medium-length world history book that really covered the world's history. This isn't easy, as most tend to focus primarily on European history. This book had relatively few reviews on Amazon, so I decided to keep looking rather than buy this when I first saw it. I ended up looking on the UK Amazon website, thinking that I may find a book there that wasn't available in the US. On the UK website, this book had many reviews, and they were very high. Based on this, I downloaded to my Kindle from the US website. The book is engaging. It doesn't cover any period as much as I'd like it to, but this is expected of a medium-length book that covers 10,000 years of history. It does however provide enough history for each period to help the reader determine what s/he would like to read about in greater detail, and then buy the relevant book for that period.

To study for Oracle exam 1Z0-062 this is the one book you should consider (in addition to the Oracle 12c technical manuals)

Study of no single book will get you a pass on the 1Z0-062 Oracle Database 12c Certified Associate exam - you will have to spend many dozens of hours with the Oracle technical documentation. I have identified and used nineteen Oracle 11g manuals that had content relevant to the exam. But if you want a book that will help you study this is the one I recommend.

I have an online version of this book available at work through my employer but as I want to step up my study for Oracle exam 1Z0-062 I ordered the paperback edition to read when not at work. Had not Mr. Watson's skillful technical writing and mastery of the subject been excellent in most respects I would not have bothered to order the paper edition. I have compared the exam topics and the book's contents and everything is reasonably covered. Mr. Watson's treatment of the topics is good, sufficiently detailed and understandable. In most chapters I found the descriptions and explanations to be exemplary technical writing. Each chapter presents a coherent treatment of its subject. In short, this book is excellent in most respects -- it is one of the best books on Oracle I have ever seen or used. Now that I have read all the chapters I could find no significant mistakes which are often the bane of such books.

The technical editor at Oracle Press likely also deserves some credit for this excellent book. The Total Tester practice exam bundled with the book has fairly good questions and answers to test your knowledge.

Even though this book has my five-star recommendation it should be used as an introduction and not a substitute for study of the Oracle technical manuals. I have passed earlier OCA's by reading the Oracle manuals alone but Mr. Watson's book is a handy one-stop reference for exam prep. So if you are going to buy one book to prepare for the 1Z0-062 exam this is the one you should get. But absolutely do not neglect reading and consulting the Oracle 12c technical documentation available at the Oracle website and, perhaps needless to add, all relevant hands-on experience as a dba will help you imprint that knowledge. In that respect the hands-on-exercises in the chapters are useful.

Addendum (Feb 2015): After reading every chapter in this book and reviewing the Self-Test questions at the end of each chapter I believe there are some minor errors here and there. For example, in the Oracle on-line documentation it is stated "Be aware that RESOURCE no longer provides the UNLIMITED TABLESPACE system privilege." Therefore Chapter 8, Self-Test Question 2 has only a partially correct answer. Note that in the actual Oracle exam 1Z0-062 there is no partial credit for partially correct answers. Likewise there are some other Self-Test questions and answers in other chapters that are similarly muddled or incorrect. From my brief survey of the blogosphere apparently a number of DBAs are not aware of this specific change in 12c. Still I consider this one of the best Oracle exam prep books I have used.

Don't fully rely on it

It is a great book, very logically structured, but some of the new chapters (comparing to the previous edition) appear to have been written in a hurry, and after taking the 062 exam I can say that about 25% of the exam questions weren't covered at all in this book. So only use it as a support, don't rely on it for your exam success, or you really risk failing.

This book is a must have for anyone prepping for the 12c Install and Amin Exam. It is the most comprehensive book so far and covers all topics in the exam. For production environment however, you will need to supplement it with other 12c Admin books.

Essential Reading / Really Good Value /

This is the first of two books by the same author (see Later Auden)and I'd recommend buying them together as they are terrific accounts which tell Auden's story (mostly) in terms of his poetry. (John Fuller's commentary (on the poetry) augments these very well).(H. Carpenter for the best intro bio.)

Why I liked these books is that they don't expose a bias regarding Auden's life (Auden tends/ed to divide critics) and the poetry (always the first casualty) isn't neglected. There's too much of value in these books to try and paraphrase them but rest assured they will not disappoint. As usual though, the whole controversy over the attitude of certain critics (Jarrell/Leavis/Eagleton) is passed over. Still, really useful. I'd say the same for the Collected Prose, the Dyer's Hand, Forewords & Afterwords. Hendon is a bit spotty but maybe useful (and affordable) for undergrads, while the Sea & The Mirror is rather specialised (Art & Christianity), maybe to be tackled later.

Early and Late Auden are not so much 'academic' works as they are real portraits by someone close to the work, the writer and his times, so there isn't that distance you sometimes feel where authors set out "to do Auden". Great value. Will not disappoint.

I was looking into purchasing this book but when I researched the authors name on google I found out that this guy is a fake Christian and after I saw some of his videos in YouTube I was able to see the true person behind this book. I advise everyone that’s considering buying this book to research the author PETER VANDEVER, and you will see who he truly is.

Great content, BUT......

This review is for the Kindle edition. There are so many typos, missing words, and grammatical errors that I could only give this edition 2 stars. I agree completely with the substance of the book, but it was not an enjoyable read because I had to fill in so many blanks for myself in the text because of words being left out or ran together. It was just awful. If this could be fixed, I would gladly change my review to 5 stars.

I love this book and the message of deep passion for revival! It's so poorly edited though that I couldn't finish it. Get it edited and republish it. This is a message that needs to be heard!
