About the Author
As an educator, Dr. Michael Windelspecht has taught introductory biology, genetics, and human genetics in the online, traditional, and hybrid environments at community colleges, comprehensive universities, and military institutions. For over a decade he served as the Introductory Biology Coordinator at Appalachian State University where he directed a program that enrolled over 4,500 students annually. He currently serves as an adjunct professor of biology at ASU where he teaches nonmajors biology and human genetics in the online and hybrid formats. He was educated at Michigan State University and the University of South Florida. Dr. Windelspecht is also active in promoting the scientific literacy of secondary school educators. He has led multiple workshops on integrating water quality research into the science curriculum, and has spent several summers teaching Pakistani middle school teachers. As an author, Dr. Windelspecht has published five reference textbooks, and multiple print and online lab manuals. He served as the series editor for a ten-volume work on the human body. For years Dr. Windelspecht has been active in the development of multimedia resources for the online and hybrid science classrooms. Along with his wife, Sandra, he owns a multimedia production company, Ricochet Creative Productions, which actively develops and assesses new technologies for the science classroom.

Sylvia S. Mader has authored several nationally recognized biology texts published by McGraw Hill. Educated at Bryn Mawr College, Harvard University, Tufts University, and Nova Southeastern University, she holds degrees in both Biology and Education. Over the years she has taught at University of Massachusetts, Lowell; Massachusetts Bay Community College; Suffolk University; and Nathan Mayhew Seminars. Her ability to reach out to science-shy students led to the writing of her first text, Inquiry into Life, that is now in its thirteenth edition. Highly acclaimed for her crisp and entertaining writing style, her books have become models for others who write in the field of biology. Although her writing schedule is always quite demanding, Dr. Mader enjoys taking time to visit and explore the various ecosystems of the biosphere. Her several trips to the Florida Everglades and Caribbean coral reefs resulted in talks she has given to various groups around the country. She has visited the tundra in Alaska, the taiga in the Canadian Rockies, the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and tropical rain forests in South America and Australia. A photo safari to the Serengeti in Kenya resulted in a number of photographs for her texts. She was thrilled to think of walking in Darwin’s steps when she journeyed to the Galápagos Islands with a group of biology educators. Dr. Mader was also a member of a group of biology educators who traveled to China to meet with their Chinese counterparts and exchange ideas about the teaching of modern-day biology.

Unique & Important Book

This is a unique and well-written book of advanced therapeutics. It is a great resource for those difficult therapeutic challenges, using a combination of anecdotal experience and thorough literature review. The authors are well-known and universally respected. Unlike many "me too" books in medicine, the style and substance of this book makes it stand out among its peers.
It is friendly and informal, and makes for easy reading. The various quotes used throughout the book beautifully accompany the text and make for a more enjoyable reading experience.

About the Author
Robert DeMaria received his PhD in Modern British Literature at Columbia University. He has directed writing programs in several universities and was an editor at Macmillan. The bulk of his creative work consists of his 20 novels, but he has also published poetry, an off-Broadway play, and a libretto for an opera. For several years he was the academic dean of the New School for Social Research. He was also the director of an overseas program for American students and writers in residence. His work has been highly praised in publications such as THE LONDON TIMES, THE NEW YORK TIMES, THE BOSTON GLOBE, THE WASHINGTON POST, and many literary magazines. He and his family now divide their time between Long Island and a house in Mallorca, Spain. His latest novel is BLEECKER STREET BLUES, set in Greenwich Village.

A handy reference

I keep this book around to answer any questions that "The Elements of Style" doesn't, though sometimes the two disagree. The author's explanations of various grammar principles are simple and concise, and its chapters on dialogue and perspectives are especially insightful.

I've had my copy since college, seven years ago, and it's never been neglected.

Experience with product

The product was brought in very decent condition. I do not anything bad to say about considering the book itself is pretty old, but still definitely held together. In fact it was in much better condition than the copy my school gave to me and about 1/16 the price it was valued at. Amazing what keeping it in quality conditions does. If you need this textbook buy it here.

Excellent!

This is an EXCELLENT advanced mathematics book. I am currently a high school student using this book on my own. Never mind the criticism of the "unclear explanations" in each section by the other reviewers. The book briefly states what is needed to do the exercises, and the majority of the "major" theorems in advanced mathematics are proved in the exercises themselves (in fact, that is why so many of the exercises are so challenging). In this way (other books just prove the theorems for you and allow people just to memorize the proof), the author allows you to figure things out for yourself. This book also has a wide scope. However, one tiny fault of this book is that it does not convince you of some of the important facts (and these theorems are definitely not beyond the level of the book), for example the "Rule of 72." Also, this book is not for the average person. It requires a lot of critical thinking. Therefore, if you are not a real math person, I would suggest you get this book along with another advanced mathematics book with more detailed explanations so that you can compare and contrast the two.

This book I really enjoy because I can take the book to the gym and work out with my friends. The pages of the book are like a desk top calendar and you and look at the pictures. It's pretty much for the novice; men may not appreciate the book as much as women would. I bought the book used and it was in excellent condition. Both and women will like this book, but I feel women will appreciate it a lot more.

Basic but Complete

I purchased this book sight unseen. I was a novice in weight training. This book demonstates that one does not need a lot of special equipment to benefit from weight training: a few dumbbells, a chair and a mat are all that is required to begin.

The book explains, and shows in pictures, how to properly perform each technique. The muscle(s) involved are shown or explained for each exercise. It has a section for absolute beginners and an intermediate section. Both are helpful. My limited experience has shown that I must carefully review the basics often to ensure that I am getting the benefits and avoiding the possible injury pitfalls. The section on the importance of stretching is great.

About the Author
Robert P. Murphy earned his Ph.D. in economics from New York University . A former professor at Hillsdale College , he is now an adjunct scholar with the Ludwig von Mises Institute and an analyst at Laffer Associates. He has worked as both an economics scholar and lecturer, as an investment/business analyst, and as a writer of popular journalism on economic topics. He lives with his wife and son in Nashville , Tennessee .

A fine analysis and defense of capitalism

Dr. Murphy valiantly crushes prevalent anti-capitalist myths, misunderstandings, and lies in this book. He also explains and defends capitalism, showing how-among other things-capitalism actually defeats things such as slavery, pollution, and racism, even though common accusations against the unregulated free-market are that it allows-even engenders-such things. Dr. Murphy also shows how when the government tries to take the place of private individuals and businesses, it operates without market incentives, is free from the punishment that bad economic choices incur on businessmen in the free market, and often fails miserably. There are also some valuable insights into major historical economic crises and issues, such as an analysis of the Great Depression and the New Deal that shows the absurdity of some of the views the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations had on economics. This is a great book that I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about economics and the free market.

Excellent Overview

Excellent overview of the capitalism/socialism argument. Has lot of good points one can use in a disagreement. I would like to have seen more of the foundation of capitalism in the Bible, for that is more where the argument lies than in just economic theory. People do not realize that the main thrust of socialism is a religious one, and that is what give it so much impetus.

The whole series is great and more information that most would get in school, both High school and college. I was already a fan of subject matter, and after this book I knew even more about it and the history of capitalism and the hidden gems of its application that are usually not covered in the history books or by the news.
If you want the TRUE history and lessons on capitalism or even if you think that capitalism is evil, read this book and learn what actually happens and how it actually works!

This Is It!

As Pat Conroy writes on the rear jacket panel of this book, "'O Lost' is the greatest news for Thomas Wolfe lovers since the publication of 'Look Homeward, Angel.'" The statement is not hyperbole. This is it---the original manuscript that Wolfe delivered to the offices of Scribners, the version around which have swirled controversies and questions ever since and yet which has remained unseen by the public until now. Was Thomas Wolfe a sort of idiot savant, a wildly impulsive and uncontrolled writer who desperately needed the firm professional hand of a Maxwell Perkins to bring form and control to his inspired ramblings? Or was he simply a genius, so far ahead of his time that even the likes of Perkins could not comprehend what he had in the innovative and unconventional manuscript of "O Lost"? On the basis of this new edition, it might be said that he was a bit of both.
For the lover of "Look Homeward, Angel," the tired phrase "essential reading" is an understatement. There is magnificent new material here (this version is 66,000 words longer than LHA). For me, the most notable appears at the beginning--a long section detailing the early life of W.O. Gant, lovingly rendered, heartbreakingly real, writing so vivid that it must be admitted that Perkins made a terrible mistake in cutting it; it is as good as anything Thomas Wolfe ever wrote. Too, the famous kaleidoscopic scene in which we see dozens of Altamont residents waking one morning in 1908 as newspapers are delivered is here much longer, much more inclusive, with far more wonderful character sketches--writing so pure that it seems to capture for all time what a certain time and place was.
Now, in all fairness, it must be admitted that some of the new material is substandard. There are any number of self-referential jokey asides that Perkins was well-advised to eliminate; they are always mistakes. The material is also sometimes annoyingly disorganized, as in the beginning of Chapter 8, when Wolfe writes: "We believe, reader, we told you some time ago that Julia had meanwhile begun to think of Dixieland, but we have perhaps forgotten to mention that the foregoing conversation, as well as a number of the preceding events, took place in Dixieland, and that Julia had altogether ceased to live with Gant." Well, gee! Thanks for telling us, Tom! This kind of thing is amateurish, and showed clearly that Wolfe did in fact benefit from editing.
But how much? Alas, as a Thomas Wolfe devotee of many years, I cannot state that "O Lost" represents, for me, the definitive form of the manuscript. It is certainly the longest! But is it, as this edition's editors claim, a "greater work" than LHA? I think that will be up to the individual reader. For me, there is a point at which "much" becomes "too much"; certainly a lot of the new sections in Part III are rather tedious (or perhaps only seem so because we're used to the faster conclusion of LHA?). Despite the editors' claims, for instance, I do not feel that the final, indelible scene between Eugene Gant and Ben's ghost was "butchered" by Maxwell Perkins; indeed, I find the longer version presented here to be bloated and aimless, unlike the sharp and unforgettable version in LHA.
In the end, the duel between "O Lost" and LHA should probably be called a draw. (The next time I read this novel, I suspect I will utilize the standard LHA edition--but with frequent consultations to "O Lost.") Remember, Wolfe worked closely with Perkins and accepted his edits, so LHA should in no way be considered a bastardized or incorrect version of the author's intentions. But the joy here is that readers can, at last, decide for themselves. Thank you, Arlyn and Matthew J. Bruccoli, for preparing this new edition. Every lover of Thomas Wolfe is in your debt.

Time regained

What a wonderful book. It's too bad so many readers today know only Tom Wolfe, not Thomas Wolfe. Even though it has been at least 10 years since reading Look Homewood Angel, I knew almost immediately when I came to the new sections. They add a depth to the novel, bringing in the whole town and relatives, rather being only about Eugene Gant. My favorite Wolfe readings involve trains; the experience about time stopping for a moment when you look into the eyes of someone looking directly at you into the train, is exactly as I remember my earlier train rides.What are they doing now, that the train has passed? Other 800 page books might be dull, but not this one. Having been given it as a present recently, I am very surprised and disappointed that it is already 'out of print." More people should know about O Lost!

Thomas Wolfe is undoubtedly one of the, if not THE, greatest writers of the Twentieth Century. He is so underappreciated. O Lost is the correct title (finally) to his first novel, Look Homeward, Angel. It was always intended to bear this title, and rightfully so, for if you read it you will understand how lost he was as a child, an adolescent, and a man. His story of the Gants is incredibly gripping and touching...hang in there the speed picks up once you get into it. It will give you so much insight on the South and the trials of a young man torn between his city, his family, and his ambitions. Thank God for Thomas Wolfe.

Even if you are not a victim of addicition, it is necessary that you read this book to learn the facts that are all too obviscated.Writting geared towards youth but definitely a book for all ages. A very needed look from a scientific and factual view point. Doesn't take morality or religion into concern, which is very helpful in educating teenagers. Deals with the hard facts and doesn't sugarcoat anything. Also provides methods on how to break the addiction

I was really surprised by how much legitimate and useful content can be found in the Fortify Program. I've already read through the program twice. There are so many applications for methodologies taught in this program! Although the program was specifically designed for helping teens overcome addition to pornography, Fortify offers useful tools to overcoming any unwanted behavior or tendencies for individuals of all ages in a language that is easy to relate to and connect with.
