Excellent Book

I am always a bit apprehensive about purchasing books like this because many I read straight through and they go right in the trash bin. I first experienced a Kundalini awakening in 1974 so have read quite a bit on the subject. Most of it being sheer bull. I would have liked more details in the Kundalini section, but since the section focused on many different types of awakenings, and not just a straight book on Kundalini, that is to be forgiven. Hopefully the author will write a book just focused on Kundalini since it seems that she knows what she is talking about. I do very much appreciate the fact that the book is focused on an audience already experiencing awakenings and what to do about them rather than yet another book by an insipid guru who wants to sell you an awakening without understanding the process themselves.
The book is broken into sections. The first goes over the spiritual journey. I found this section interesting, and remembered many parts of the difficulties and triumphs of my own spiritual journey while going through. A small critique in that she seems to focus on expanding peace and embodiment as the central focus of an awakened state while I have experienced love and compassion as the focus of my own experience. Nevertheless, I do agree with much that is said here and it is said beautifully, and simply, without the heavy handed sort of ideological and puritanical tripe that is so prevalent in most of this type of literature.
The next section goes over types of awakenings. I found this to be incredibly helpful and again simplistically stated for such a complex subject. I have never found all of the different types of awakenings in one book before, and some of them I had no little understanding of. At this point on my path I already knew some of what is stated here, but for someone new, or even experienced on the path like myself there are little bits of information to be gleaned that are thought provoking. Of particular note is her understanding of psychic abilities being a byproduct of the awakening process, which is rarely talked about in more mainstream literature
The next section is seemingly about physical and emotional symptoms that occur with some meditations thrown in. I didn't find this section as fascinating as the first two, and think the first few sections, especially the section on types of awakenings could be expanded a bit instead of this section being in there. But this section was interesting and I am sure essential for someone who is wondering what is going on with them and how to find relief from the at times strange physical and mental effects of the spiritual journey.
Overall I enjoyed this book and will keep it and likely read it again. I do hope the author comes out with an expanded work with more details on the types of awakenings, or a work solely focused on Kundalini for my own benefit, but this work is clear, succinct, and something I wish I had alongside me on my journey to refer to when needed.

A textbook for your spiritual path

There are so many spiritual books that I like, but don't completely feel true for me. I read them and keep columns in my head: what I believe, and what I don't agree with. I am so grateful for Mary's book because I do not have these reservations. It all rings true for me, as someone who has been walking a spiritual path for all of my adult life. Mary is the real deal. I can tell she is writing from a place of knowing, and not just repeating what she has heard from other teachers. As she says, she has gone from seeker to sought, and I appreciate her guidance, expertise, and realness in what is often a hyped and dogmatic world. If you have found this book, you should probably read it, and check out her blog and website, too. I can't get enough!
